A THAME apprentice and a Thame business are celebrating this week after scooping top honours at the Thames Valley Apprenticeship Awards last Thursday (20/09).

Lydia Feasey won the Advanced Apprentice of the Year award and Thame-based DAF Trucks were awarded the Large Employer of the Year title at a ceremony held at the Madejski Stadium in Reading. Both will go onto the national finals at the NEC in Birmingham in November.

    Fun and rewarding experience

Lydia, 22, a former student at Lord Williams’s school in Thame, who is in the fourth Year of her apprenticeship at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy, was delighted to win and is looking forward to the finals. She said: “It is a great feeling to have won the Advanced Apprentice Award for the Thames Valley. I have put in a lot of effort and worked hard throughout my apprenticeship and in return it’s been a very fun and rewarding experience.”

Tony Shepherd from DAF Trucks was pleased that his company had been recognised for the work it does with apprentices. He said: “Winning this award is a reflection of the great work that goes into the DAF Apprentice Programme. It is particularly rewarding to be recognised this way at a time when we are currently reviewing all aspects of the programme in line with our continuous improvement philosophy.”

    Remarkable achievement

Paddy Patterson, from Oxfordshire County Council, who leads the Oxfordshire Apprenticeships group, said: “There are around 50,000 Apprentices across the Thames Valley, so to be nominated either individually or as a company is a remarkable achievement. To have category winners from Oxfordshire is an excellent advertisement to prospective candidates and employers about the quality of the Apprenticeship scheme locally.”

  • Home based businesses take advantage of new hub

MORE than 20 home-based, local businesses took advantage of a new ‘homeworkers hub’ which met for the first time in Didcot this month.

The hub was launched by South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils following research by Oxfordshire Rural Community Council which identified that isolation can be a key factor in the failure of small businesses.

The first meeting took place at Cornerstone in Didcot on Wednesday (11/09), when the group met to share experiences of working at home and to launch a new self support network.

In a joint statement, the two district councils said: “A large number of highly skilled businesses choose to work from home as it gives them the flexibility in organising their business time and family time. However it also brings with it downsides to overcome, such as loneliness and isolation. These businesses may also need some business support or simply someone to bounce ideas off, and the homeworkers’ hub was set up with the aim of providing just that.”

Anyone wanting to find more information about the South and Vale Homeworkers Hub, or to attend the next meeting on Wednesday, October 9, can contact Nikhilesh Haval at nikhilesh@nikreations.co.uk.

  • 16/07/13… Join the celebration as Thame Therapy Clinic ‘comes of age’

THAME Therapy Clinic is inviting everyone to help raise funds for local Charity, Sobell House, as the clinic celebrates 21 years in Business.

On Saturday, July 20, between 1pm ? 6pm, Thame Therapy Clinic, the longest established complementary health clinic in the town, will be hosting an Anniversary Event at its centre in Upper High Street, Thame.

Opening its doors back in 1992, the clinic began as a hands-on centre of healing, offering osteopathy, acupuncture, physiotherapy, massage, and counselling. These core therapies continue today along with others, including homeopathy, massages of every description, nutritional therapy, reiki and speech therapy, reflecting the ever-changing world of complementary health.

Andrew Roscoe, co-owner with Kieran Spencer since 2007, said: ?Since taking over the clinic we have grown the team from eight to 19 fully trained practitioners, who are experts in their field. We are firmly committed to a policy of transparency providing an honest opinion as to how much help we feel we can offer a client. Our approach is to try and make a positive difference within five sessions.

“The purpose of the event, as well as to mark our milestone anniversary, is to highlight how the treatments offered at the clinic can help people live happier, healthier life?s, especially for those who can?t tolerate prescription medicine or have previously undiagnosed medical problems. We will be offering taster session on the day, so we cordially invite clients, old and new to come along and experience first hand the various treatments available.

“The funds raised will be going to the Sobell House charity so as well as treating yourself you will be doing it all for a worthy cause. We look forward to seeing you on the day.?
