  • 03/04/13…How businesses & organisations could save lives

OXFORDSHIRE’S local ambulance service is urging all businesses and organisation who are more than five minutes away from medical treatment to install a simple piece of equipment that could save lives.

In the last three months South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) has helped 35 businesses and organisations across the South Central Region to help to potentially save a life by inspiring them to install an automated Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) at their premises. What?s more a further 44 businesses and organisations have already pledged to install one in April, 2013.

In the UK approximately 30,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest outside hospital and are treated by emergency medical services every year. A patient?s chance of survival decreases by around 10% per minute following a Cardiac Arrest. As such it is vital that emergency medical treatment begins as soon as possible.

If defibrillation is delivered promptly, survival rates as 75% can be achieved. The UK Resuscitation Council suggests an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) should be available wherever medical treatment is more than five minutes away.

SCAS recommends that a PAD be installed by amongst others, activity centres, bus stations, art centres, charitable trusts, churches, cinemas, community centres, corporate businesses, medical centres, equestrian centres, football clubs, garden centres, golf clubs, health and fitness clubs, hotels, museums, nursing or care homes, parish councils, post offices, public houses, residents associations, restaurants, schools and colleges, shopping centres, service stations, sports and social clubs, supermarkets, railway stations, village associations and volunteer groups.

The cost of a PAD including a secure box is

A THAME Insurance business has been awarded the prestigious title of 2012 Broker of the Year, by a Lloyds underwriting agency for its skill and professionalism with commercial insurance.

“This is a great honour for us as there were other, much larger brokers being considered,” said Sandra Pearson, of Pearson Insurance Services, in Swan Walk, Thame

The award comes on top of another in 2010 from Stroud Life readers, in Gloucestershire (where Pearson’s were based before moving to Thame later that year), who voted Pearsons ‘Small Business of the Year’ for their customer service levels.

“We try to be different, by truly listening to our clients and not selling them anything!” continued Sandra. “We try to arrange the insurances they need at a competitive price with reliable insurers, and we support them with their claims.

“Sometimes clients have not taken a holistic look at their insurances and are paying for overlapping covers. We offer free reviews of insurance policies at any time but on March 23, which is ‘Make a Day of it in Thame’ day, we are also offering a £10 voucher to use in The Swan’s new Cygnet Restaurant with any policy purchased on that day, in addition to £20 off buildings and contents policies for Thame Loyalty Card members.

  • South Oxfordshire high streets still bucking national trend

Bill_buttermarket_thameSOUTH Oxfordshire?s market towns continue to perform better than most when it comes to the number of shops open along the main high streets, with more than 94 per cent of units currently occupied.

The annual South Oxfordshire retail vacancy survey took place in January across Thame, Henley and Wallingford, with all three towns well below the national average when it comes to the number of empty premises.

In Thame nine out of a total of 183 shops were empty (4.9 per cent), however just one of these is registered as having retail space (as opposed to being more suitable for office space for accountants or solicitors). While this is a positive, SODC who carried out the survey, say that it has raised ‘a slight concern’ about the lack of available retail space in the town centre, a key factor in attracting new business.

Thankfully the turnover of shops in the local area has meant that twelve new outlets have opened and independent traders continue to try out new initiatives to encourage greater footfall and repeat visits.

In Henley, 12 out of the 281 available units (or 4.2 per cent) in the town centre were empty, an improvement from a year ago when 17 properties were unoccupied, and significantly below the national vacancy average which lies around 13.5 per cent. The town has also seen 15 new businesses open in the past year.

In Wallingford the number of empty units was still below the national average, however 15 out of the town?s 140 premises lay empty in January (10.71 per cent, up from 6.4 per cent last year) with one or two larger units notably bare. Five shops have moved premises in the town, while three new retailers opened for business in the last year.

Cllr Judith Nimmo-Smith, Cabinet Member of Economic Development, Property and Technical Services, said: ?By attracting a whole host of unique independent shops, South Oxfordshire?s market towns continue to do significantly better than many other areas around the country when it comes to making sure that we fill empty units.

?By working closely with local traders, partnerships, town councils and landlords on initiatives such as shop wrapping and pop-up shops we continue to provide the support that our towns and traders need to keep up our vibrant high streets.?
