  • £320,000 available for local groups in South Oxfordshire

SOUTH Oxfordshire District Council has re-opened its Capital Grant scheme offering grants to local organisations – particularly this year, looking for sustainable and environmentally conscious projects that can contribute towards the council’s Climate Emergency Declaration.

Thame has benefited in various ways from these funds over the last few years, including Thame Sports Club, the new Cricket Pavilion and the Skate Park which have all had large allocations.

The district council has £320,000 of funding available for local groups, including town and parish councils, undertaking building work and other community and energy saving projects in the coming year.

Local organisations in South Oxfordshire have until midday on December 2, 2019, to apply to the council for money towards improving, creating or replacing community facilities.

Grants range from £1,000, which could cover the replacement of a village noticeboard, to £75,000 towards a project like a new recreation ground, but the improvements must benefit local residents. The maximum we are able to fund is 50 per cent of the total project cost. Groups are encouraged to refer to the guidance notes available on the council’s website before making an application.

Cllr Maggie Filipova-Rivers, the council’s cabinet member for community services, said: “We are looking for projects that; improve the health and wellbeing of our residents, help support disadvantaged groups and encourage communities to join together.

    Recent grants include

    • £99,790 towards Crowmarsh Gifford’s new playground and outdoor gym, which opened in April 2019
    • £13,444 helped to pay for a new, energy efficient flat roof for Sonning Common’s village hall
    • £30,450 went to support the restoration of 17th Century bells at Cuddesdon Church

For more information and advice please visit the council’s website www.southoxon.gov.uk/grants, email the grants team at grants@southandvale.gov.uk or give them a call on 01235 422405.

  • Lib Dems announce general election candidate

AS announced yesterday (29/10), the country is to go to polls on December 12, 2019, for a General Election. Laura Coyle has been announced as the Lib Dem candidate for Henley & Thame and, say the party, they are confident of winning the seat from the sitting MP, Conservative John Howell.

    Laura Cole

In the European elections earlier this year, the Lib Dems became the first party other than the Conservative to win an election across the Henley constituency since 1910 – over a hundred years – when they received 36% of the vote with the Brexit Party second on 29%.

Laura has lived near Goring for eight years with her husband Ray and six year old son who attends the local school. She also has two teenaged stepchildren.

It was as a Lib Dem councillor in London that Laura started to fight for the homeless and those who are living in substandard and insecure housing. Laura now works as a housing solicitor in Oxford providing advice and legal representation to tenants and homeless people, primarily through legal aid. Sheis also a director of a small almshouse charity.

Laura believes that access to good quality housing is fundamental to social justice and human dignity. She campaigned for remain in 2016 and has continued to campaign against Brexit ever since. She wants to give the people of Henley the chance to vote for someone who believes that the UK, and the world, will be a better, greener, safer place if the UK remains at the heart of Europe.

Laura recently spoke out against Government interference with the South Oxfordshire local plan, saying: “South oxfordshire residents decided what they wanted in the local elections when they chose LibDems and Greens to represent them. The Government should not be interfering with local councils. If our councillors choose to withdraw the controversial Conservative plan because it damages our local communities, that is their decision to make.”

  • Changes to Arriva 280 Bus Service

CHANGES have been made to the 280 service as from November 3, 2019, to help improve punctuality. Buses will continue to run at the existing weekday frequency of every 15 minutes between Oxford and Haddenham, and every 30 minutes Oxford to Aylesbury, but the times will change slightly.

Most journeys that currently terminate at Haddenham & Thame Parkway will be extended through Haddenham to terminate via a loop of Churchway, Stanbridge Road and Woodways.

  • Invitation to Clean Air and Clean Energy Open forum in Thame

The UK Government has declared a ‘Climate Emergency’ and increasing calls from around the world for action in response to serious global warming is influencing more communities and councils to look at what they can do to face the challenges of accelerating climate change.

And so it is here in Thame where residents are being invited to take part in a Clean Air and Clean Energy open forum.

The RSA Thame Group which, working as independent Honorary Consultants to Thame Town Council, has spear-headed Thame’s draft Green Living Plan, will hold its next Open Forum at Thame Town Hall on Wednesday July 10, at 7pm.

Charles Boundy is the Founder and Chair of the RSA Thame Group. In the invitation he explained: “This is a vital next step in the development of Thame’s Green Living Plan and your chance to make a direct contribution to the town’s future well-being.

“The evening is devoted to two key environmental topics from the Green Living Plan. The first is Clean Air; how much do we really understand and value this and what causes the pollution that makes us ill and adds to greenhouse gases?  Second is Clean Energy; how can we reduce the use of polluting fossil fuels in and from our streets and buildings by making greater use of renewable energy?

“Even agreeing these objectives leaves a range of options as to how we might achieve them. Some of these involve tough choices, which is why we need your views. We’d like to know how far and how fast you believe we need to act locally, and in Thame showing the way forward.

“After a short introduction from the RSA Thame Group and any overarching questions, we’ll use a workshop approach to look at a series of charts where everyone will have the chance to register their view. We will welcome all views and discussion. We’d also like to know where you feel you need more information.

“It would be helpful if you would let us know if you intend to come (or if you have a burning question or would like to help out on the evening) by emailing Anne Fisher to that effect – anne.fisher50@yahoo.co.uk

“Please also visit our website www.thamegreenliving.org.uk and become a member to join in the conversation on our Facebook page
    www.facebook.com/groups/ThameGreenLiving

“Please forgive us if you get this notice more than once as we want to make sure as many as possible see it. Likewise feel free to pass it on to others.

We look forward to seeing you for a vital discussion!”

  • Green Party first to announce European Elections candidates

The Green Party has selected its candidates for the South East Region (which includes Thame) for the European Elections, due to be held on Thursday, May 23, 2019.

The Green Party, which has held a seat in the region for twenty years, is aiming to win a second seat in this year’s election.

1074 Green Party members (14%) voted to select the list of 10 from 22 candidates in an STV ballot.

The Candidates in order of selection are:

Alexandra Phillips, Brighton and Hove Green Party
    Elise Benjamin, Oxfordshire Green Party
Vix Lowthion, Isle of Wight Green Party
Leslie Groves Williams, Adur Green Party
Phélim Mac Cafferty, Brighton and Hove Green Party
Jan Doerfel, North Surrey Green Party
    Larry Sanders, Oxfordshire Green Party
Isabella Moir, Mid-Sussex, Crawley and Horsham Green Party
Oliver Sykes, Brighton and Hove Green Party
Jonathan Essex, East Surrey Green Party

The South East region has returned a Green MEP for 20 years, since Caroline Lucas first won her seat back in 1999. Keith Taylor has held the post since 2010. The Green Party hopes that the current candidates will continue to push the boundaries where Caroline and Keith have succeeded thus far.

At the last European Parliament elections in 2014, across the UK, the Green Party increased MEP numbers from two to three. Recent opinion polls predict that the number of Green MEPs could double, with the possibility of two MEPs being elected in the South East of England.

Lead candidate Alexandra Phillips said of her nomination: “Greens elected to the European Parliament aren’t just going to stop Brexit – we can be trusted to fight against inequality, defend peoples’ rights at work and take the action we so desperately need on climate change. We’ll take a stand against the rise of racism across the continent, and be MEPs for everyone who lives in our region, whether they have lived here for their whole lives or recently arrived.

“I cannot wait to go head to head with Nigel Farage to show him that we reject his party’s hate – and believe in working with our European neighbours on our shared challenges.”

  • Tom Wyse – Independent – Thame North & District Council elections

MY name is Tom Wyse and I was elected to Thame Council as a Independent 4 years ago.

    Tom Wyse

I have been very fortunate to have been born in Thame and to be able to enjoy living here all my life.

My adult children achieved degrees at University after receiving a first rate education in Thame schools.

In the last four years I have been a active member on the three main council committees, I am also the council representative for the very successful Thame Town Music Festival, in 2017 I had the great pleasure of opening the first Music Festival.

In 2017/2018 I had the privilege to be elected to the office of Mayor of Thame. In my duties as Mayor I was invited to many events in the town this made me very aware of the many kind local people who give their time and volunteer to make our town such a great place to live in. These people really are the backbone of our community.

Thame has grown from the sleepy little town of my childhood, the town has expanded and many new families have decided that our town is a great place to live in. We must welcome these families and encourage them to take part in all that Thame has to offer.

I have always tried my best to work for the good of all the people of Thame and I believe it is not necessary to promote political parties on the local councils, the only criteria  should be to make decisions for the benefit of Thame people.

For the above reasons I ask you to vote for me to be elected as a Independent councillor for Thame North ward and also as a Independent councillor for South Oxfordshire District Council.

  • Rebecca Fox, Joshua Lay, Helen Flitton and Paul Swan – Labour Party – Thame North and Thame South

IN the Town Council election, Rebecca Fox and Joshua Lay are standing for Thame North ward and Helen Flitton and Paul Swan are standing for Thame South ward. Paul and Joshua are also standing for Thame in the South Oxfordshire District Council election. All candidates live in Thame with their young families.

Rebecca, Joshua, Helen and Paul state that:

“We love Thame and we want this to be an even better place to live now and for generations to come. That is why we are campaigning for a greener, safer and fairer future. We will achieve this by supporting key local services, engaging the community to find innovative solutions and protecting our environment. We will build on the excellent work done by current Labour councillor, Mary Stiles.

“We are concerned about the massive cuts Tories and Lib Dems have made to local government and schools since 2010, local child poverty and families relying on food bank parcels in Thame. Labour is committed to investing in our communities and public services, and opposing austerity.”

The Labour candidates’ priorities for Thame are:

    • Families, children and young people – championing local schools, supporting the Red Kite Family Centre and improving children’s play areas and facilities for young people.
    • Transport solutions – campaigning for a cycle route to Haddenham train station, a town hopper bus, sustainable public transport and traffic calming measures near Lord Williams’s school.
    • Protecting our environment – working to improve parks, footpaths and open spaces, whilst opposing fracking and the environmentally damaging Oxford to Cambridge Expressway.
    • Sustainable development, local business and culture – supporting sustainable development with the necessary services and infrastructure. Working with the community land trust to deliver genuinely affordable housing for local people. Supporting the high street, local businesses, festivals and events.
  • Sonja Francis – Green Party – Thame North

” If elected I pledge to support Thame Town Council to scrutinise for Climate Sustainability, every aspect of its functioning and services..”

    ABOUT ME

I’m Sonja Francis and I’ve lived and worked in Thame for 27 years, married to John with whom I’ve brought up our three children who all went to Thame schools and have now spread their wings!

For the last 16 years, I’ve been News Editor of www.thame.net so I like to think I know how Thame ticks!

Thame is a great place to live and work and is generally a clean and green, thriving market town – largely through the care and attention of Thame Town Council.

BUT – beyond Thame we know that the world’s climate is changing and too much waste and over-consumption is impacting our beautiful planet and threatening all our future lives and livelihoods.

    MY PLEDGE

If elected I pledge to support Thame Town Council to scrutinise for Climate Sustainability every aspect of its functioning and services, including the revised Neighbourhood Plan, the Green Living Plan, where the council buys its energy from and where it chooses to invest YOUR money, to make sure that the council sets the best example it can to our communities by enacting and encouraging an effective response to what has been officially declared to be a ‘Climate Emergency’.

    GRASS ROOTS ACTION

All of us now have to take responsibility for halting the march towards possible water shortages, poor air quality, unsustainable house-building, loss of habitat for our native animals, birds and insects and the legacy of a worse world for our kids to inherit.

    TIME FOR ACTION

So, from ranting on social media and marching for climate action, I’m ‘putting my money where my big green mouth is’ and standing up for what I believe in by putting myself forward for election to represent YOU as a member of Thame Town Council. So, if you share my passion to make Thame the greenest, most people and beast-friendly, healthy and happy place in which to live, work, bring up a family and retire, please vote for me on May 2, 2019
