  • Double Bill at Thame Cinema 4 All – January 26, 2010

MESRINE: KILLER INSTINCT and MESRINE: PUBLIC ENEMY NUMBER ONE – France 2008 113 minutes(part 1) 133 minutes (part 2) 15 certificate – Directed by Jean-Francois Richet, starring Vincent Cassel.

Jacques Mesrine was perhaps little known this side of the channel, but in his native France he was something of a folk hero – bank robber, killer, serial jail breaker, relentless self publicist and media darling. Revelling in his very public notoriety, he spent his time inside in the embellishment of his own mythology, and wrote an autobiography – Death Instinct – the source material for Richet’s thrilling, edge-of-your-seat two-parter.

The films chart Mesrine’s two decades of legendary criminal feats (including numerous, increasingly spectacular, prison breaks), finishing on 2 November, 1979, when he was executed in a hail of police bullets, an extra-judicial operation for which no prosecution was ever made.

Vincent Cassel is mesmerising in the role of his career: Mesrine is a brutal man, a properly nasty character, and his account of his own life is sufficiently warts and all to avoid hagiography. However, he is also ambiguous and compellingly charismatic – quick witted, man of his word, master of disguise – to the extent that we are reluctantly persuaded of his frightening allure.

The two films were inexplicably released in the UK during July and August, meaning that those of us who ignore the summer film schedules missed the opportunity to enjoy one of the year’s most blistering movie experiences. So, as a special treat, we bring you the two of them back to back for an evening of quality gritty gangster cinema – we’re talking more The Long Good Friday than The Untouchables – what the Guardian described as “muscular, forthright storytelling, hard-smoking, hard-drinking action, horribly incorrect attitudes… and bushy moustaches..”

    This Saturday 23rd January, 2010

The first film is at the much earlier time of 6pm (doors 5.30) with the second starting a little later than usual at 8.15. i.e.there will be a 20 minute interval between the two films.

    Admission to either film is

  • Thame Cinema 4 All presents MORRIS: A LIFE WITH BELLS ON 16/01/10

UK 2009 101 minutes 12A certificate – Morris: A Life with Bells On is a mock documentary that explores a peculiar and arcane English obsession. The film will be preceded by a demonstration by local group, Owlswick Morris!

The plot: Derecq Twist is a Squire of the respected Millsham Morris, with a lifetime ambition to dance the mystical and legendary Threeple Hammer Damson. But he is also possessed of a desire to drag Morris dancing into the 21st century with the introduction of the avant-garde Extreme Morris.

Like Scott in Strictly Ballroom, Derecq faces the hostility and condemnation of the Morris establishment, and is ultimately stripped of his hankies and staffs, forced into artistic exile in California, where he finds enthusiastic support from a flamboyant fringe LA Morris scene.

Charles Thomas Oldham’s delightful film takes the mock out of mockumentary – it is very funny without sneering and ironic without being superior. Instead we are persuaded of the joy of the dance and the satisfactions of quirky obsession.

This genuine heart-warmer has become a cult hit. Don’t miss your chance to see it.

Preceded by a brief Morris dancing exhibition by local group Owlswick Morris.

  • Youth Theatre revival continues at The Phoenix Studio

THAME Youth Theatre?s revival continues with all three groups staging original productions this coming week (from Thursday, 17.12.09)in the newly opened Phoenix Performing Arts Studio.

On Thursday, the Juniors and Middies will perform a double bill, the Juniors presenting an adaptation of a traditional English folk tale, Cape o?Rushes, while the Middies tackled a version of the much-loved classic, A Christmas Carol.

On Friday and Saturday, December 18th and 19th, at 7.30pm, the Seniors will be performing the premiere of an original musical based on the fables of Aesop, with music written by local musician, Steve Bannister.
Chris Walters, who wrote the script, explained: “Its full title is Aesop ? a comic soap opera of betrayal, violence and death? with songs, and that pretty much sums up its approach. It tells all the stories that people know, even if they didn?t know they were by Aesop ? the Tortoise and the Hare, the Lion and the Mouse, etc – but instead of telling them one by one, they mix them up together, like? well, like a soap opera.”

The production is bright and colourful, with hummable songs, bright colourful costumes, and a sense of vitality and humour that makes them suitable for the whole family.
