  • Musician subjected to ‘drive-by’ shooting

SINGER-Songwriter, Nikki Loy, a popular and regular performer at Thame’s First Thursday Music Club, has talking about her terror at being the victim of a drive-by shooting.

    Singer-songwriter, Nikki Loy

Writing on her website, Nikki wrote: “Luna Van Blanc (my van) and I were the victims of a drive by shooting! Sounds mad doesn’t it! Hard to believe but it happened.

“On Friday night (January 20), I pulled over beside Swanbourne Lake in Arundel to make some dinner and put away my laundry. I’d been stopped there for about two hours when I heard a car with a loud exhaust race by, and a BIG bang. I jumped out of my skin, it was so unexpected. Then a sound I remember from the break in last tour – Falling glass. My van was hit. I wondered what the hell happened. Nervously I investigated and discovered my kitchen window, the biggest and most expensive was shattered. Something from the passing car had broken it. As it was too high to be a ricocheted stone I had to presume foul play.

“I won’t lie – that properly scared me! So with heart pounding I jumped in the driver’s seat and started the engine. I spun Luna round to search the spot expecting to find a beer bottle or the like, there’s a pub just down the end of that dead end street. But there was nothing, no sign of any kind of projectile. I didn’t dare get out incase they came back and I wasn’t going to stay, so I drove on… I didn’t stop until I found a safe place near a friend. I was totally unequipped to board up the broken window in the middle of the night – I’d run out of everything. In the end a Jennifer Hamley handbag box and a lot of sellotape did the trick. It was not a fun job. It was -3 degrees out and a big hole in my camper was really the last thing I needed – that, wrecked travel plans for the week, and expensive repairs!

“The van also looked like I’d been burgled. Before I drive I usually go through a ‘tack down’ ritual where I basically put away everything that will move in transit. I was so freaked out and in such a hurry to get out of there that I didn’t tack down. What a mess to clear up! And with glass splinters in my fingers. By 1:30am I just about had everything sorted and managed to settle down and sleep.

“The next morning when I inspected the damage properly, I noticed the hole in the glass was perfectly round… And the insulation mat was also pierced. My CSI mind told me this was a bullet hole. So I searched through all the broken glass until I found a pellet. A horrible moment of realisation – I had been intentionally targeted. Someone in the car that passed me had wound down the window, taken aim and fired at my van on purpose!!!!! No accidental damage – It was willful intent! I was absolutely furious! That person had no idea what was the other side of that window or who they were harming. I could been a burly bloke or a pair of dainty old ladies on a retirement trip?! And they were very lucky I wasn’t standing by my cooker with the blind up or they would have hit me too!

The gun pellet that smashed Nikki Loy’s van window

“Before you ask, yes, I did report it to the police but disappointingly they closed the case immediately because I couldn’t give them any leads! Folks, I can’t leave it at that because… when I posted about my experience on the internet I found out other people had experienced similar incidents on the same road!

“I understand why the Police closed the case. I saw nothing; they have nothing to go on but I feel it is important for the whole community local to Arundel to whom tourism is so important, to know that some people are driving around at night blindly shooting into vehicles! Okay it’s only an air gun… but it’s a lot of damage, and a lot of hassle and money to fix and more importantly – It’s only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured.
“As you know I love visiting Arundel; it’s a beautiful town but I am now scared to go back there until these people have been stopped. If you are local. I’m sure Sussex police would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about these incidents.

“Anyway, I am safe; I am warm’. Once again I have learned from my own poor choices that made me vulnerable… And I am telling the media because I want those little ******s stopped!

“Just gotta recover my brave before I go off on tour with Sam Bailey!”

  • Thame voices to be broadcast on the BBC

A THAME choir will have a moment of national fame, when a world première performance of a piece specially composed for them is broadcast BBC Radio 3.

    chamber_choir (500x230)

Thame Chamber Choir’s world performance of The Hoard was written by Neil Tòmas Smith as part of a scheme called “Adopt a Composer”, for which Thame Chamber Choir and Thame Children’s Choir, TCC2, were selected a year ago. The composition was inspired by “The Thame Hoard”, a collection of medieval, gold and silver artefacts, found in 1940 by the river Thame and now housed in the Ashmolean Museum.

The recording was made last October during the choirs’ concert in St Mary’s Church, Thame, and was not without incident – the BBC’s super-sensitive recording equipment picked up some extraneous noise, and so the choirs had to stay behind after the concert and re-record the piece once the audience had departed!

Independent Mortgae Solutions (RGB) - R1The programme will be broadcast on January 23, at 9.20 pm.

Thame Chamber Choir’s next concert is on Saturday, March 11, also in St Mary’s Church, Thame.

  • Thame Cinema – Burn, Burn, Burn

THE first film showing of 2017, at Thame Cinema 4 All, will be BURN BURN BURN, with a cast including Joe Dempsie, of Skins, and Game of Thrones fame.

This UK film carries a 15 certificate and is directed by  Chanya Button, and includes in the cast Laura Carmichael, Chloe Pirrie, Sally Phillips, Julian Rhind-Tutt, Jack Farthing, Alice Lowe, Hannah Arterton and Alison Steadman.

    burn_burn-400x300

This is a rare chance to see this crowd pleasing British gem. Dan (Jack Farthing) dispatches his good friends Seph (Laura Carmichael) and Alex (Chloe Pirrie) on an arduous road trip around the UK. He’ll even accompany them: not so much backseat driver as wedged into the glove compartment, in tupperware, decreasing in volume as the trip progresses: you see, Dan is dead, prematurely deceased from cancer. Dan has bequeathed his bewildered, emotionally free-falling pair of friends with a video instructing them to scatter his ashes in places dear to his heart.

Their journey brings them into contact with an array of misfits, eccentrics, and plenty of opportunities for reflecting on lives at a turning point, with Dan’s funny, often painfully frank video messages as company and provocation. A crackling, tragi-comic, mordantly funny, life-affirming voyage of self-discovery, with a stellar cast including Laura Carmichael (Lady Edith in Downton Abbey) and a series of brilliant cameos from screen greats including Julian Rhind-Tutt, Alison Steadman, Jane Asher, Nigel Planer, Sally Phillips and even Matthew Kelly!

The producer of the film, Daniel Konrad-Cooper, grew up near Thame and he is coming along to present the film, and to stay for a Q&A after the movie, when he will share his experiences of this film and other anecdotes from an impressive and varied film-making career. “…a sort of millennials’ mashup of Laughter in Paradise and Last Orders” (The Guardian)

Burn, Burn, Burn, is at The Thame Players Theatre, Nelson Street, Thame, on January 7. Doors open at 7.30pm (Licenced Bar)

  • New community radio station appeals for funds to reach target

RED Kite Radio, the new radio station for Thame, Haddenham and the surrounding villages, has moved a step closer to launch after being awarded two grants. The cash from the Haddenham Beer Festivals Trust and The Rothschild Foundation, based at Waddesdon Manor, means that the station is now even closer to hitting the airwaves in late Spring 2017…But it still needs more cash.

Welcoming the awards, Chairman of Red Kite Radio, Mark Chapple said: “We’re over the moon with this grant funding which puts us in a stronger position as we move closer to our launch in Spring 2017. We’ve been lucky enough to receive funding from the Haddenham Beer Festivals Trust and the Rothschild Foundation to the tune of nearly £7000. Much of this money will be used for essential transmission equipment and work to build and renovate our studio at the Haddenham Garden Centre. I’d like to thank both organisations for their kind generosity.”

The Haddenham Beer Festivals Trust operates two beers festivals in Haddenham, including the recent Winterfest. So far it has raised over £220,000 for good causes in our community.

Chaired by Lord Rothschild himself, the Rothschild Foundation supports Waddesdon Manor and gives grants to a variety of charitable initiatives including local good causes situated close to the 19th century property.

The radio station urgently needs to raise a further £3000 to get on air in 2017.

“As a not-for-profit radio station licensed by Ofcom, we will be completely funded through grants, donations and the sale of advertising and sponsorship to local businesses and traders,” explained Mark. “Very soon we’ll be in a position to release a number of founder sponsorship packages at a heavily discounted rate to local businesses. The money raised will help us plug the gap and fund essential fees like music copyright (PRS & PPL). We’re asking local businesses to register now on our new website www.redkiteradio.com

“Local people who’d like to donate money or office equipment can also get in touch via the website.”

Independent Mortgae Solutions (RGB) - R1Red Kite Radio, based at the Haddenham Garden Centre, will provide hyper-local programming for Thame, Haddenham and the surrounding villages on 107.2fm. Staffed primarily by volunteers, it will follow the successful Summerfest Radio broadcasts in support of the Haddenham beer festival – Summerfest.
