According to Terry Bloxham of The British Beatles Fan Club: “The Dung Beatles are pure unadulterated fun….definitely not your average Beatles tribute band.” Since they formed in early 2013, The Dung Beatles have played extensively at festivals – including Towersey, theatres, clubs, corporate and private events.  The same year, they played live on BBC Radio and in 2014 performed at Liverpool’s world famous Cavern Club. Recently this year they were the closing act on the main stage at the Cambridge Trinity Hall June Event 2015, playing to a packed house of over a thousand students, on the same bill as Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac.

Last month, out of a total of 15 acts during the course of the evening, six artists made their debut at FTMC whilst local news hound, Hayley O’Keeffe,  sang and played in public for the first time ever!

Entrance, as always is completely FREE! First time amateurs through to full time professionals, and any genre of music, are welcome. The club has a full house PA system with keyboard, bass amp, guitar amp, cocktail drum kit all set up. Just turn up and plug in! Player sign up is between 7.30 pm and 7.45pm.

  • Games champions in the making

John and Tess Davie demonstrate the games they have invented
John and Tess Davie demonstrate the games they have invented

FOLLOWING the news that nine year-old Alice Grapes from Chearsley, has reached the final stage of a national competition to invent a new game (SEE LINK), it seems that there are more young games inventors in the Thame area.

John and Tess Davie from Thame have both also been shortlisted for the Brainbox games Young Games Designer of the year award.

The siblings love playing board and card games, and both came up with imaginative, fun games for the whole family to play. Tess, whose game, Gold Rush, is an exciting chase game, said being on the national shortlist was ‘brilliant’.  Her older brother John said: “I’m really pleased that people might get to play our games and enjoy the ideas we’ve had.” John’s game is a card game in which players make different potions, and it’s his second game to be shortlisted for the prize.

Independent Mortgae Solutions (RGB) - R1The competition winner gets to have their game manufactured by Brainbox Games, and will win a pile of games as high as they are!  If either of the siblings wins this prize, they will donate the games to their school, John Hampden Primary in Thame.

  • A Brill way to try orienteering!

FANCY a new outdoor challenge for all the family? Why not try orienteering at Brill Common this weekend. Thames Valley Orienteering Club is organising an event on Saturday, November 14, for newcomers, families and runners to try out this exciting adventure sport.

Orienteering is one of the country’s fastest growing adventure sports. At most events, there are several courses of varying length and difficulty, suitable for families and children. There are also longer courses for the more competitive and for runners looking for a new challenge.

Beacon Wood family large cropped (400x400)

At the event in Brill you will receive a special orienteering map showing a series of checkpoints. The challenge is to visit all the checkpoints, but you must decide your own route between each one. When you find each checkpoint, it is marked by a flag and you will need to register each one using an electronic timing chip to record your progress.

“Most people don’t realise that orienteering is a competitive running sport,” said Mike Shires, Publicity Officer for TVOC. “However, orienteering really is a sport for all. Our events attract keen runners as well as plenty of families who come along for a jog or walk around a course. It’s also a great opportunity for parents to have a run while the children tackle a junior course.”

TVOC is Clubmark accredited and has around 250 members from Bucks and the Thames Valley. The club organises around 25 events a year, ranging from local events for 100 competitors to larger regional events with 1,000 runners. Newcomers are always welcome.

Club member Blanka Collis, 31, said: “It’s a good way of keeping fit and for me it is also more interesting than just jogging. It’s an extra mental challenge. Sometimes people think it’s like treasure hunting. They say: ‘I did that at school once-upon-a-time’ but it’s a running sport for all the family.”

To have a go this weekend at Brill Common, just turn up between 10am and 11.30am. There will be five different courses set up, of varying difficulty and length, from 1km to 5km. Parking is by the windmill on Brill Common. There will be plenty of help on hand for newcomers.

The cost is £6 / £2 entry on the day, including a map to keep and hire of an electronic timing chip. For more details visit TVOC’s website at www.tvoc.org.uk
