  • The community choir with the professional finish

John GibbonsLORD Williams?s Festival Chorus (LWFC) is performing a stunning programme of choral music by Brahms and Rutter next Saturday, March 16.

Thame?s biggest community choir has gained a name for itself as an unauditioned choir which stages concerts to an extraordinary standard ? often with some surprises for the audience on the way.

Choir Chair, Claire Humphries, said: ?We benefit considerably from the profile of our conductor, John Gibbons, and our relationship with the superb Ealing Symphony Orchestra. We often find surprise stella performers on stage with us, like Nicola Benedetti and winners of the BBC Young Musician of the Year! The famous tenor, Adrian Thompson, is so supportive as our president, and Howard Goodall is our Patron. So few amateur choirs have the chance to put on such high-profile concerts with such prestigious soloists.

“Of course during rehearsals, it?s all just fun, and singing the most wonderful music together. Many members say to me that Monday night is the highlight of their week!”

On Saturday 16, LWFC will be performing two sublime pieces by Brahms. Noenia (?Nanie?), or ?Song of Mourning?, and the deeply moving Schicksalslied (?Song of Destiny?). In contrast, the programme also includes the rousing ?Gloria? by John Rutter, who is one of the most loved contemporary choral music composers, and ?The Lake?, from Barry Seaman?s new opera, ?Mirabai?.

Tickets, which are selling fast, cost £13 (£10) are available from Cargo in Thame, from Mrs R Scott-Smith Tel. 01844 344083, or from the web sites:www.lordwilliamsfestivalchorus.org.uk and www.wegottickets.com/event/202401 (search under Beauty and Drama).

  • 06/03/13…..Great Big Guitar Party strikes a chord

CLASSICAL guitarists from Thame and neighbouring villages came together in Ickford last Saturday (March 2nd) to play at the 2013 Great Big Guitar Party.

Twenty five guitarists aged between seven and 40 came from Thame, Shabbington, Ickford, Worminghall, Tiddington, Morton and Long Crendon to perform at Ickford School in front of a packed audience. The programme, which included solos, duets and numerous ensemble pieces, was performed after just a quick afternoon practice together.

Organiser Paula Child said: “The Great Big Guitar Party gets bigger every year! The music ranged from 15th century Renaissance to Oasis, taking in flamenco and the blues along the way. The classical guitar is predominantly a solo instrument, so it?s wonderful to have the chance to play together.”

If you or your child is interested in joining a classical guitar ensemble, you can contact Mrs Child on tel. 01844 201236 or pchild@fsmail.net

  • 26/02/13….Thame Players Theatre – Far From the Madding Crowd

CLASSICAL theatre with a contemporary twist! At The Players Theatre, Nelson Street, Thame; FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD – By THOMAS HARDY, Adapted for the stage by Connie Stephens – Sunday, March 24, 7.45 pm.

One she loves, one she hates, one she cannot live without…

Wilful, spirited Bathsheba Everdene owns a farm: unusual for a young woman in Victorian England. Even more remarkable is her intention to manage the estate herself. Enter Gabriel Oak, rejected suitor of our heroine, who proves to be a godsend in rural matters. The fact that he continues to adore her from afar does no harm either.

Oak?s presence on the farm gives Bathsheba the occasional hour off to perform rudimentary tasks, such as sending joke Valentines to lonely neighbours. One such is Farmer Boldwood, a man who has kept so tight a lid on his feelings for two decades that he responds to the February 14th missive with quite devastating passion, leaving the stunned Miss Everdene to think that she might just have to marry him out of sheer guilt.

While she?s teetering between conscience and ?till death do us part?, Sergeant Frank Troy appears with his handsome looks, tight jacket and smooth ways, diverting her attention to the all-consuming joy of being wooed by a man who knows how to use his sword. Could he be The One? Or could too much glitter be a foil for an empty soul?

So the stage is set for Thomas Hardy?s most searing exploration into what love really is, the heights and depths to which it drives us and the guises which passion-without-substance will assume to deceive and ensnare the guileless.

Romantic, funny and devastating all at once, ?Far From the Madding Crowd? is Hardy?s eulogy to Dorset during the industrial revolution, his attempt to preserve the traditions of the county with as much reality and as little sentiment as possible, and part of his personal quest to understand why ? at times – human beings are so hopelessly cruel to one other.
