  • 09/11/12……A Royal Affair at Thame Cinema

THE next film showing at Thame Cinema, The Players Theatre, Nelson Street, Thame, will be ‘A Royal Affair’ –
Denmark 2012, 128 minutes, 15 certificate, Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, Starring Alicia Vikander, David Dencik, Mads Mikkelsen, Mikkel Boe Folsgaard, Trine Dyrholm.

This sensational costume drama offers a rich portrait of European courtly life in the eighteenth century and the political implications of changing social politics in the decade preceding the French revolution. Caroline Mathilde, sister of England?s ‘mad’ George III, has been married off to the Danish King Christian VII, who turns out to be a bit mad himself, violent, drunken, licentious ? a liability. Johann Struensee, a German physician with dangerously progressive political views, is recruited to manage the King?s excessive behaviour, becoming his trusted physician and confidante, using this position to manipulate his patient and effectively rule Denmark.

In his attempt to innovate cruelly repressive politics under the influence of Enlightenment philosophy, Struensee has a like minded ally in the Queen. The two embark on a risky affair that does not go unnoticed by their enemies at court. Based on what, to British audiences, might be a little known true story, this riveting film is a compelling drama of passion, politics and power. Think The Madness of King George with the sombre chill of The Killing.

  • 03/11/12……CHANGE OF FILM:’ The Hunter’ THIS week!

THE next Film at Thame Cinema -The Hunter – Due to a delay in receiving a licence to screen, A Royal Affair, The Hunter will now be shown next Saturday, November 3, and ‘A Royal Affair’ will be postponed until Friday, November 9.

THE HUNTER – Australia, Cert (UK): 15 Runtime: 110 mins Directors: Daniel Nettheim, Rafi Pitts

Cast: Callan Mulvey, Frances O?Connor, Malek Jahan Khazai, Mitra Hajjar, Rafi Pitts, Sam Neill, Willem Dafoe.

THE Tasmanian Tiger is a species of marsupial that was assumed to have died out of its native Australia in the early 20th century. The last remaining examples lived on the island state of Tasmania, itself something of a living relic of untouched native wilderness now extinct from the rest of the globe. Much legend and mythology is attached to the many rumours about a small handful of elusive surviving Tigers, and the tragedies that befall those arrogant enough to hunt them down. One such hunter is Willem Dafoe?s Martin David. Ostensibly a scientist researching another rare species ? the Tasmanian Devil ? he is in fact a mercenary/assassin hired by a shady biotech firm to hunt for relics of the last Tiger. His mission leads to the suspicion of secretive locals with a loathing of ?greenies?, clashes with the commercial interests of the logging industry, and the awesome challenges of the wilderness itself.

Tasmania has long exemplified the political and ethical tensions between economic survival, and conservation, so in many ways the hunter?s story works as a rich metaphor. But it is also a gripping and visually captivating drama about isolation, mortality and nature, with a stunning central performance from Defoe, an actor with such powerful screen presence that one mourns the rarity of his meaty starring roles.

Jason Solomons in the Observer wrote: ?One of this year?s most memorable films, containing one of the best performances, The Hunter is a piece that creeps into the viewer?s soul. It is dank and clammy, with ice in its heart, but it is also beautiful and painful, its emotional climaxes hitting home like precision bullets.?

All films start at 8pm and doors open 30 minutes before each film. Admission is just

  • 02/11/12….Mysterious flame-haired story-teller coming to Shabbington

CHARISMATIC story-teller Cat Weatherill is in Shabbington this Friday, November 2nd, to perform her show ?Falling Like Feathers? at the church. Hailed by author Michael Morpurgo as ?one of our greatest story-tellers?, Cat takes us on a journey into the dreamlike landscape of fairy tales.

Laced with luscious language and shimmering images, it?s a step from the safety of the path into the delicious danger of the forest.

A mysterious, flame-haired storyteller arrives at a snowbound castle to tell stories to a haughty queen, her 17 year old daughter and assorted guests. As the snow deepens outside, the storyteller tells of witch-maidens and marsh queens, flowers with the power to wipe memories, poisoned apples, talking doves and a sword sharp enough to wound the wind. Working a mysterious magic with her wonder tales, she will not leave the castle as she found it?

Paula Child, from organisers Friends of St Mary Magdalene said: “We?ve been able to invite Cat thanks to the ?Theatre in the Villages? scheme. Audiences everywhere are enthralled by her story-telling. People keep coming up to me and saying, ?l?ve seen Cat before, and she?s extraordinary?. It?s going to be a spell-binding way to unwind on a Friday evening.”

Falling Like Feathers is on at St Mary Magdalene Church, Shabbington, on Friday, November 2, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost
