  • Thermal imaging helps save money on your energy bills

FREE Home Insulation check by thermal imaging- see where your heat is escaping and get free advice on how to stop it!

Transition Thame and District and Thame & Chinnor Friends of the Earth will be providing free home insulation images this November using equipment loaned by South Oxfordshire District Council.

    How it works

? Thermal images have to be taken after dark and when the building heating is on. They show up where heat is escaping from houses (red and yellow areas in the image above) and therefore where insulation could be improved.

? With your permission, we will take an image of your house one evening between the 13th and 27th of November and invite you to our meeting in Thame on the 3rd of December where all the images will be available and free advice on insulation from the Energy Saving Trust will also be on offer.

? Should you wish to take away and keep the image of your home there will be a

  • Mail warning over school applications AMENDED – DATE PARA 4 (Status: Press release) 17/10/09

OXFORDSHIRE parents who intend to make paper applications to Oxfordshire County Council for their children to start school or move onto secondary school are being advised not to post them because of the proposed Royal Mail strike.

This advice is being issued to try and prevent the possibility of application forms being held up in a probable backlog of mail which may not be delivered before the application submission deadlines.

    WHEN ARE THE DEADLINES ?

Monday, November 2, 2009, for secondary school applications, and Friday, November 13 for primary school applications.

For secondary school paper applications, parents are advised to hand in their application at their child’s Oxfordshire primary school, or, if their child attends a primary school in a different county, or an independent school, to hand in the form at any community, voluntary controlled or voluntary aided primary school in the county.

Parents with children who are due to begin school in the academic year 2010-11, who wish to submit a paper application are advised to hand in their forms at one of the schools they have listed or at any other state-maintained primary school listed in the ‘Starting School’ leaflet.

Alternatively parents can apply online at www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/admissions or deliver the application forms in person to County Hall in New Road, Oxford.

Parents whose applications are received after the relevant deadline are less likely to receive an offer of a place for their child at one of the schools they have listed.

A delighted Gill Coleman, Manager of Thame and District Day Centre, welcomed visitors from Barley Hill School recently, when they arrived with the pupils? Harvest gifts for distribution among the centre?s members.

Thame and District Day Centre, a registered charity meets three days a week at the town?s Community Hospital and provides day care, entertainment, a hot lunch and friendship for isolated, frail and elderly people in the area.

Norman Brand, a former volunteer driver for many years and Secretary of the Day Centre Trustees, said: “I love doing this work. One of the happy results of it is that I can?t walk into town or visit any shop without meeting someone I know. That means a very great deal to me.”

  • Get off on the environmentally friendly foot for Christmas (Contributed)

CHRISTMAS seems to be looming fast and for many of us it is a time of much expense, somewhat wasteful and an awful lot of recycling generated as a result!
Well here is your chance to start Christmas off on the right foot!

Join us at our Christmas Green Fayre this year on Saturday 21st November at Thame Town Hall, 10am ? 3pm. Here you can browse around Local and Fair trade stalls selling a variety of gifts, crafts, jewellery, clothes and produce, for more environmentally friendly Christmas shopping.

If you have any toys to sell before Christmas, or are looking for second hand toys, why not make use of the Toy Exchange at the Green Fayre. All you have to do if you are selling is to bring clean items in good condition along to the Town Hall between 9am and 10 am on the day, and collect unsold items at 3pm. Friends of the Earth will keep 25% of the selling price for all items sold. All toys must be clearly labeled with your name, telephone number and the asking price.

Another service we are offering at the Green Fayre is collecting some more unusual items for recycling, as follows: unwanted stamps, foreign coins, old reading glasses, mobile phones, CDs, used batteries and empty printer cartridges. So start collecting and bring along on the day!

There will be free Christmas activities for children, with Christmas gardens, making cards and table top arrangements, all using recycled materials.

Entrance to the Green Fayre is free, with free lucky dip prizes for the children and free mulled wine and mince pie to begin your Christmas cheer.

  • Don’t lose your voice for the general election

THAT’S the message from South Oxfordshire District Council as it gets preparations underway.

Although a General Election has not yet been called, one has to take place by June 3, 2010, next year so the council wansts to make sure that all eligible residents can have their say on polling day.

It has sent forms to every household in the district to compile a new electoral register that will be the basis for the General Election.

    TEXT OR PHONE

Registration is quick and easy. If people?s details are the same as the previous year?s they can let the council know online, by text or by free phone, so there?s no need to post a paper version. If there are changes, however, the form needs to be altered and posted back.

    EVERYONE NEEDS TO RE-REGISTER

A common misconception is that if you notified us last year you don?t need to this year. Unfortunately the information cannot be used again, so households need to let the council know each year even if their details haven?t changed. Contrary to popular belief, people are also not automatically registered even if they pay council tax. Registering is particularly important for anyone who has recently moved home.

David Buckle, Returning Officer for South Oxfordshire District Council, says: “Voting is the only way residents can choose the people making decisions that affect their everyday lives, but they can only do this if they?re registered. Registration is happening now and is very simple.”

    CREDIT RATINGS

“A General Election must take place by 3 June 2010, so by registering to vote people are securing their voice in deciding who will represent them in Westminster and ultimately how the country will be run in the future. Another really important reason to register to vote, particularly in this current economic climate, is it can affect people?s credit ratings.

“Latest figures show that about 14,500 households still have not returned their forms. Registering in the next few weeks will save the council about

  • Newshoots festival of pupils’ films

ONCE again young film makers from both independent and state schools locally and internationally, are coming together for the fifth, Newshoots film making competition.

Newshoots is taking place on Friday, October 16, 2009, in the state of the art media suite at Wheatley Park School, Holton, Oxfordshire. The competition enables students from independent and state schools to work collaboratively and share good practice, and this year brings together seven schools – Lord William?s School, Wheatley Park School, The Abingdon School, Bicester Community College, The Cherwell School, King Alfred?s School and The Marlborough School.

In the past, Newshoots has attracted entries from as far a field as Denmark and South Africa. Guests and presenters have included Dick Fontaine, Head of Documentary Film Making at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, Wesley Smith and Hannah Shellswell of Central Television, Richard Bradley, Director of Lion Television, Boris Johnson and Mark Reid, Head of Education at the BFI.

This year’s guest judge will be Director/Producer Ruki Sidhwa, who has worked on many BBC documentaries and programmes such as Crimewatch UK and Children In Need.

Over five years, Newshoots has changed considerably in format to its present ?salon? style format with the emphasis on critical reflection, discussion and networking. Discussions will be based around the introduction of the new A level specifications by the examination boards. Competing students have the opportunity to challenge the judges on their decisions.
