  • Warning over ‘vamoose’ burglaries

THIS is a Ringmaster message from Thames Valley Police.
“There is a rise in the number of reported burglaries and vamoose burglaries (where offender(s) gain entry to steal keys) then steal the vehicles from the driveway, in large remote properties.
Recent incidents have occurred in Nuffield, Ipsden and Beckley, in the Henley and Thame areas.
Because of the locations of the properties being remote, some owners have a tendancy to leave their cars unlocked and even leave keys in their ignitions.

“Advice is to Lock your cars and take the keys inside the house. Do not leave keys in view or where they can be easily found and ensure that all doors and windows are shut and locked overnight especially on the ground floor.

“Please report any suspicious vehicles or unusual callers to your home to the police on 08458 505 505 and where possible record the make, model and
registration numbers of vehicles as well as any descriptions of people calling.”
    End of Message

  • Warning to Wheatley parents

WHEATLEY PCSO, Ken Cooney, has issued the following warning to the parents of pupils of Wheatley Primary school and John Watson school:
“It has been brought to the attention of the Neighbourhood Action Group and the neighbourhood policing team that people are parking on the zig-zag lines outside Wheatley Primary School and the John Watson School. This is while they are dropping off and collecting their children from school and some drivers are also using the entrance of the John Watson School to turn around.
“I would like to remind motorists that inconsiderate parking can be dangerous and a bad example to students who could be learning to driven themselves.

“The purpose of the zig-zag lines and other road markings are to prevent people parking in such a way as to cause an obstruction or interfere with a driver?s or pedestrian?s visibility near the school. We would ask that drivers obey the road markings and do not park on the zig-zags or use the school entrance as a turn around point. Local officers will be monitoring the situation and will deal with drivers appropriately.”

  • Thame by-election candidates present their priorities

WITH only one more day to go before voting begins in the Thame South Ward by-election, ThameNews.Net asked all the candidates what their two main priorities would be, should they be elected to Thame Town Council.
Clifford Baker, who is standing as a Conservative candidate, said: ?My first priority would be to try to understand what services and facilities will be needed to be provided by the new library, to meet the needs of everyone in the town and to ensure that we get a building that does not ?cut across? the character of the town.
?Secondly, I will support all the groups and centres in town for the elderly and the disabled.?

Margaret Bretherton, who is standing as a Lib Dem candidate, said: ?My main priority will be to work towards the provision of a much-needed cycle path between Thame and Haddenham.
?Secondly, I will work to get the right sort of development for Thame, on the Cattlemarket site in North Street.

Andrew Gunn and Mary Stiles, the two Labour candidates were unavailable at the time of going to press but according to their election literature, ?They would like the Town Council to be more active in the formation of working groups as a source of ideas for the town, and to be more positive in collaborating with groups already in existence. This way local people can be more fully involved in future developments.
?They want the Town Council to open up its meetings by providing 15 – 20 mins at the end of each meeting for public questions.?

Hussein Mirza, Liberal Democrat candidate, said: ?I would like to fight for more facilities for the young people of Thame, outside school hours ? activities that provide a life balance against exercises in maths, English etc ? exercises that promote enjoyment of life and help keep them physically fit and encourage healthy eating and other positive life-style choices. In other words, to help young people become balanced citizens.
?Secondly, I believe there should be facilities in the new library, in the swimming pool etc for middle-aged and elderly people particularly, to encourage them to get out and about, away from their homes so that they feel connected and not locked in their homes.?

Michael Welply, who is standing as a Conservative candidate, said: ?If elected, my major priority would be to robustly and rigorously lobby the district council to fund, design and develop a new community facility on the cattlemarket site, somewhere for all the groups in Thame, like the U3A, to meet and flourish ? something that, working together with 21st Century Thame, the county council, and all stakeholders, with all our ?shoulders to the wheel,? produce something we can all be proud of and which will be the ?Taj Mahal? of South Oxfordshire!
? Secondly, I will work tirelessly to enhance Thame?s retail sector without which the town will die.?

The election is tomorrow, Thursday, July 10.

  • ‘Dubble’ succes for Thame pupils

DUBBLE SUCCESS !! Pupils from John Hampden Primary School in Thame were rewarded by the local branch of the Co-Operative supermarket for their commitment to Fairtrade in an achievement assembly at their school last week.
Year 5 pupils had been working on a project about chocolate ? from bean to bar ? and learnt that the cocoa grown in Mim, a village in Ghana, was used to produce the Fairtrade ?Dubble? chocolate bar. But when it came to tasting it the children were disappointed to discover that the only place they could buy it from locally was at the Oxfam shop.

So, the children wrote to the management of the Thame Co-Op, who sell a large range of Fairtrade goods, to try to persuade them to sell the Dubble bar in their store. They were delighted that their letters were answered very promptly ?.AND with the news that they?d hoped for!

Within days the Co-Op were selling Dubble in their Fairtrade caf

  • New cycle track at Thomley Activity Centre

THE Thomley Activity Centre at Worminghall, near Thame, has recently installed a 1km long cycle track to encourage exercise and active lifestyles through cycling, running & wheelchair use.
The design of the track, once fully complete, will also include road safety features to help young people learn about street awareness and cycle proficiency so that they can cycle more safely at home. The centre also plans to run cycling proficiency courses which will improve cycling skills, increase road safety awareness and reduce danger to children.

The cycle track was in use for the first time during the recent national Cycle Week.

NOTE: Thomley Activity Centre is a recreational facility for disabled children (0-16 yrs), their families, friends and schools. Its aim is to achieve the following outcomes.
o To increase the self esteem, health, confidence and social skills of disabled children and their siblings through accessible play and recreation.
o To provide parents with an opportunity to meet others who have disabled children, to lessen their isolation and to increase their ability to support their children through play.
o To help the community gain understanding and acceptance of disability issues so they can include disabled children within their own community activities.

Many sporting & physical activities are often not made accessible to people with disabilities. Most non-disabled children have access to playing fields, accessible play equipment and a safe area in which to play. Through Thomley?s work, we strive to offer a variety of fully accessible equipment suitable for all ages and abilities so that disabled children have equal opportunities as non disabled children.
