  • Haddenham neighbourhood update (Status: press release)

NEIGHBOURHOOD Specialist Officer, PC Gareth Morley, gives this month?s Haddenham update:
To introduce myself I am Gareth Morley and in this newsletter I will be reporting current news from your neighbourhood police team.

I am the Neighbourhood Specialist Officer (NSO) for the Haddenham with Long Crendon and Brill district neighbourhood.

You are all invited to attend a public meeting on Wednesday 14 May at 7.30pm in the Walter Rose Room in Haddenham. We are eager to meet residents, community leaders and any other residents interested in helping to resolve issues within their communities. From this public meeting a Neighbourhood Action Group will be established to tackle local issues. If you want to help tackle issues that concern you in your area please contact us.

A drugs warrant was executed by officers at an address in Long Crendon under Operation Falcon recently. During the search officers found an amount of cannabis.

It is well recognised that community involvement plays a huge part in the fight against drugs and the crime it can generate, and we and partner agencies consider each and every resident a key player in the fight against drugs and drug-related crime.

We want each and every resident to join us on this campaign for the good of everyone. This is not just about providing us with information and reporting crime, but also about passing on the message to others and ensuring everyone ? including the police and their partners ? are doing all they can to hit dealers and offenders where it hurts most and provide treatment opportunities to those who wish to kick their habit.

If you know have any information about drugs in your area phone police on 0845 8 505 505 and tell us about it. If you don?t want to leave your name call the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.

I am asking all residents in the area to be vigilant after a recent increase in burglaries. We are patrolling the area with the assistance of additional police officers from Wendover police station but we need your help to catch those responsible. If you see something suspicious, phone police on 0845 8 505 505 and tell us about it.

Overall, though crime in the Thames Valley is continuing to fall by 9.4% thanks to the help of local communities. Notable falls include burglary, down 9.3%, criminal damage is down 10.9%, car crime is down 11.9% and robbery is down 10.5%.

We are always looking for ways to improve our customer service to all the people in the neighbourhood. For this reason we have launched a new email address for Waddesdon police station:

    waddesdonstation@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk

Why not visit us at Waddesdon police station? The station?s opening hours are:
    Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10am ? 1pm

  • Local group urges climate law changes (Source: Press Release)

THAME and Chinnor Friends of the Earth urged Gordon Brown and Boris Johnson MP to stop ignoring aviation, by drawing attention to flying’s carbon emissions.
The group gathered outside Thame town hall on Saturday, April 4, with a larger-than-life, Gordon Brown, covering his eyes while playing with an aeroplane ? “hoping aviation emissions will just go away.”
The group wants the Government?s new Climate Change Law to cover all sources of carbon dioxide emissions, including the UK?s share of emissions from international aviation and shipping.
Boris Johnson, MP for the Henley constituency, will have the opportunity to vote on the law when it is debated in Parliament later this month.

Chinnor and Thame Friends of the Earth was taking action as part of a national day of action in support of The Big Ask, Friends of the Earth?s campaign for a strong Climate Change law.
Friends of the Earth has led the campaign for a strong Climate Change law through The Big Ask. The law, which is set to be introduced this summer, is groundbreaking but needs strengthening if the UK is to play its part in tackling climate change, says FOE.
The Government?s proposed law does not count the UK?s share of emissions from international aviation and shipping. Friends of the Earth believes it is ludicrous to pretend these emissions don?t exist, and unfair to treat aviation and shipping any differently to other sectors of the economy. The Government already publishes figures on aviation emissions and there is no practical reason why they can not be included from the outset. A way of including shipping emissions should be worked out as a matter of urgency, says FOE.

    FACTS:

Aviation is a fast growing source of carbon dioxide emissions. Government figures published in January 2008 showed that aviation accounted for 6.4 per cent of UK carbon emissions.
The impact of aviation emissions is double that of carbon dioxide alone because of other gases that planes pump out at altitude.

The Big Ask, Friends of the Earth?s climate campaign, is calling on Boris Johnson to vote for a strong climate change law that:
    * Includes the UK?s share of emissions from international shipping and aviation
    * Commits the UK to cutting its emissions by 80 per
    cent
    * Ensures steady progress by cutting emissions by at
least 3 per cent a year

Chinnor and Thame Friends of the Earth Maureen Dyroff, supporter and local resident said:
“It?s crazy for Gordon Brown to leave out climate changing emissions from planes and ships from the new Climate Change Law but that?s what he is doing. Why should our local industry and businesses be held to account for their carbon emissions but not the aviation industry? We hope our MP, Boris Johnson, will use his vote to call for a strong Climate Change law that covers all emissions.”

  • Council delays Windmill Road development decision

THAME Town Council has deferred making its recommendation about a plan for houses on the old Thame United Football club site.
Neighbours around the site have compained that planning notices were sent to them by South Oxfordshire District Council only days before the application was due to go before the town council’s Planning committee last Tuesday (01/04). They want more time to view the plans and consider how any development might effect them.

The application, for Outline residential development, has been submitted for J G Land & Estates, London.

Thame Town Council will consider the plan at its next Planning meeting on April 15.

  • Cattle market plan withdrawn

A Planning application for relocating the Thame cattle market to land off Rycote Lane, has been withdrawn by the applicant, Trustees of J M Castle of Knottymeade Farm.

  • Appeal against Thame housing development

A Thame Developer is to appeal against a decision by the district council to refuse planning permission for a housing development on the edge of Thame.
Rectory Homes want to demolish the old Memec industrial builings, in Thame Park Road, and build 99 homes and associated underground parking.

When the application went before Thame Town Council’s Planning committee recently, Cllr David Dodds was particularly scathing about the design of the homes, which he described as ugly and looking like “..a big, blank wall of red.”

He suggested that Rectory Homes should go to Thame’s Twin town, Montesson, in France, where modern housing design, in his opiinion was done well.

  • ‘Stop chasing London dreams’ Boris Told

FOLLOWING Boris Johnson’s ‘Commons questions this week about PSCOs on London Buses, the Labour Candidate for Henley, has demanded that Boris show what efforts he has made to support his own constituency’s PCSOs.
Richard McKenzie said today: “At a time when Henley’s PCSOs and Police Officers are calling for the public’s support it seems perverse that Henley’s MP is spending his time in Parliament campaigning for PCSO’s on London’s Buses.
“I have written to Mr Johnson requesting that he detail what efforts he has made to support his local PCSOs and Police Officers in the Henley Constituency,” continued McKenzie.
He went on to say: “I hope that Boris will quickly concentrate on the people who are paying his salary and allowances, rather than spending time chasing his London dreams.”

  • Local Group tells politicians ‘stop ignoring aviation’ (Status: Press release)

‘GORDON BROWN’ will be standing outside Thame town hall next Saturday, when a local environmental group urges him and Boris Johnson MP to stop ignoring aviation’s contribution to carbon emissions.
Thame and chinnor Friends of the Earth – together with a life-size cardboard Prime Minister – will be drawing attention to the outside Thame town hall from 10am.

Boris Johnson, MP for the Henley constituency, will have the opportunity to vote on the law when it is debated in Parliament later this month.
