IN 1976, Thame played the mighty Dutch team, Ajax. Were your there, and can you remember what the outcome was and any details about the match?
A ThameNews.Net reader is currently writing a book which includes a chapter about the day Thame United played one of the best teams in Europe. In a message to ThameNews.Net, Dave says:
“It was a friendly match and although I was at the game, I can no longer recall how it came about or any of the details. I’m wondering if I can reach out to your readers and see if anyone can help with memories of the match?”

THAME Football Partnership has announced details of a three-year sponsorship agreement with sales development company CPM. The agreement sees the locally-based business, which is the global leader in providing integrated sales and marketing solutions, provide a club sponsorship for TFP and a brand new 17 seat minibus for the club over the next three years.
Martin Ryan Managing Director of CPM, commented: ?We are always keen to provide local support to community organisations and with the new stadium complex being constructed right on our doorstep it felt appropriate that we support the youth of the town in some way.
?Having seen the facility at an early stage and heard the plans for the future and what Thame Football Partnership are doing locally for the community, we wanted to be part of this and help support the football partnership through this sponsorship.”
TFP?s Frank Thompson said: ?We are really pleased to have CPM as our club sponsor and the addition of the mini-bus for the Club is a most welcome and much needed resource. CPM is going to be providing us with fantastic support and we look forward to a long and successful partnership with the clubs.”
The deal not only involves the provision of the Club mini-bus but will also see all playing members provided with branded CPM tracksuit tops for the start of the new season.

THAME Football Partnership’s new stadium and facilities, currently under construction, has been renamed following a major sponsorship deal with a local company.
Thame based ASM Auto Recycling Ltd are to provide sponsorship for the new stadium at Meadow View Park and for Thame United Football Club in a deal that provides ongoing support over the next three years.
The new Stadium will now be called the ASM Stadium.
Paul McDonagh, of ASM commented: “Having seen what Thame Football Partnership is doing locally for the community, we wanted to be part of this and help support the football partnership through this sponsorship. We are big supporters of football at all levels and we are really pleased that we are now getting involved with the club at both Youth and Senior levels.”
With Thame United back in the Hellenic Premier Division, and looking to be playing at The ASM Stadium in the late Autumn, TFP is hoping that attendances will increase with support for all the sides playing there.
TFP?s Frank Thompson said:”We are really pleased to have ASM as both our stadium and senior team sponsors. Paul and the other ASM Directors have demonstrated to us that they are passionate about their involvement with the clubs and we are looking forward to a long and successful partnership with them. The deal not only involves the name for the stadium but also includes new ASM home and away playing strips for Thame United sides, as well as branded training packs.
When it opens members of the new facility will also be entitled to a discount on car parts from ASM?s site in Rycote Lane.”

A VERY proud Thame United have officially been presented with the Hellenic League Division One trophy.
At the Annual League Presentation Awards last week, Chairman Jake Collinge, Manager Mark West and Assistant Manager Frank Thompson received the Trophy from League Chairman, Bob Dalling (pictured).
Thame United will be playing in the Hellenic Premier Division next season and hope to be playing at their new stadium by the late Autumn this year. The management team have been busy in the close season and pre-season training will be starting on Tuesday?s and Thursday from June 22, 7pm to 8.30pm at Lord Williams’s Upper School, lower sports field. All players are welcome.
Thame have also lined up some interesting and competitive pre-season friendlies as they prepare for this season starting with a tough trip to Woodley Town from Hellenic Div 1 East. This will be followed by Hellenic Premier side, Old Woodstock Town, then to Reading Senior side, Woodcote and Stoke Row who won the Reading Senior Cup last year.
Old rivals, Penn & Tylers Green, again from Hellenic Div 1 East and now under the management of ex Thame player Matt Miller, provide the opposition on July 31, followed by a tough encounter against Marlow from the Zamaretto League.
The Reserves also have a number of fixtures lined up and it is expected that at least two more matches will be added to this line up to complete the pre-season.
First Team Fixture details:
Saturday 10th July v Woodley Town, 3pm
Tuesday 13th July v Old Woodstock Town, 6.30pm
Thursday 22nd July v Woodcote & Stoke Row, 7pm
Saturday 31st July v Penn & Tylers Green, 3pm
Tuesday 3rd Aug v Marlow
Reserve Team fixture details
Saturday 10th July v Woodley Town, 3pm
Thursday 22nd July v RAF High Wycombe, 6.30pm
Weds 28th July v Grendon Underwood, 6.30pm
The league campaign is expected to start on August 10, with the fixtures being released towards the middle of July.
A resounding success was the verdict following Thame Boys annual six-a-side tournament where over 3,500 people and 130 teams attended the event over the weekend, and with good weather the food tent was kept really busy.
On the pitch, Thame Boys had success with the Under 10?s side winning their age group and the Under 12?s coming runners up in their’s.
Age groups from Under 7?s to Under 14?s competed over the two days and organiser, Paul Hopwood, was delighted with the feedback he received from a number of parents and opposing managers.
“It?s really nice when you get told that this is the best event they come to and how friendly and well organised it is,? said Paul. “It makes all the hard work that goes into it worthwhile?.
The organisers of the event, Thame Football Partnership, expressed particular appreciation to Lord Williams?s School for allowing the use of the pitches, and all of the Managers, Parents, Referees and players for making it such a great tournament.
Next year the venue will move to the new development at Meadow View Park, TFP?s Frank Thompson said: “We have been using the Upper School site for the last 15 years for the tournament and it has done us proud. However, with our new site we will now be able to host a tournament that will be even bigger and better than anything we have achieved before. With our new 20 acre site and all the facilities we have there, it will enable us to provide a Tournament from Under 7?s through to Under 18?s and hopefully play the finals on the main stadium pitch.”
THAME’S newly elected Mayor, Adam Buckland, helped cement in place the final concrete block of the foundations of Thame’s brand new Football stadium this afternoon.
With the help of John Howell MP and the newly elected Chairman of South Oxfordshire District Council, Mike Welply, the Mayor carried out his first official function in Thame, on what is an historic day for Thame football.
In his official address, the Mayor recalled the dark days of August 2005 was Thame United was forced to leave Windmill Road in Thame, and how they had since had to play at Aylesbury United and Wallingford Town’s grounds in the interim, thanks to their generosity.
He expressed his appreciation to The Thame Football Partnership, Thame Town Council, Sports Solutions GB and the Football Foundation, and also thanked SODC for its support.
“I would like to say a special thanks to the two Chairmen in the partnership, Jake Collinge and Tim Green,” said the Mayor. “The fact that there is a partnership at all is a huge credit to both men. Without people like them pushing these projects on, Thame would not have such amazing facilities.”
It is hoped that the pitch will be seeded within the next week, and hopefully, with plenty of sunshine and rain, will be ready to play on for the 2011 season.
The facility should be completed sometime in the Autumn this year, 2010.
