Jo swam brilliantly and came home with four medals – 2 x Golds (200 Back and 50 Fly); 1 x Silver (50 Breast) and 1 x Bronze (100 Back) – and three Personal Bests.

Paralympic swimming star Jessica-Jane Applegate and Commonwealth medallist Jack Thomas were at the Championships and swam in challenge races with some lucky competitors, giving the event a really great fun atmosphere. Club spokesperson, Helen Williams, said: “A massive well done to Jo for such amazing achievements – we are all very proud of you.”

CRICKET – Wolverton 1sts vs Thame 1sts – Newly-crowned champions of the Cherwell League, Thame won easily at Wolverton last Saturday, leaving themselves with one game left to complete an unbeaten season. Wolverton, the bottom-of-the-table side, won the toss and elected to bowl. On a wicket that helped the bowlers, Thame batted sensibily and scored quickly at the end of the innings. Contributions from Mike Beard (40) Honey Garg (41) and James Adams (36) helped Thame reach a good score of 238 for 9. In reply, Wolverton were never in the game, as Thame’s captain Mike Higgs took 5-35 and the hosts were bowled out for 103 in 29 overs. The final league game for Thame, against Long Marston, will take place this Saturday, September 5, at Church Meadow.

Thame 2nds vs Long Marston 2nds – Aiming to secure their place in the top half of Division 5, Thame IIs took on Long Marston, who chose to bat first. Led by openers Miscampbell (79) and Cockbain (38), the visitors posted a par score of 217 for 7 in 53 overs. The best of the Thame bowlers were James McStay (2 for 26), Chris Jeffcock (2 for 68) and Dan Patey (1 for 17 and unlucky not to take more wickets). In reply, Thame’s innings was dominated from the first to the penultimate over by Chris Jeffcock’s outstanding 107. As in most winning run-chases, good partnerships are critical and Jeffcock put together 68 with Jinman, 60 with Patey and 35 with Oli Sutcliffe, who rounded off the win in style, with 4 wickets standing and 10 balls of the 47 overs to spare.

Twyford 3rds vs Thame 3rds – Twyford IIIs forfeited their game, in the Division 9’s end-of-season cup, so Thame IIIs go through to the semi-final on September 5. (SOURCE: Contributed)

BOWLS – Nearing the end of the Bowling season and a quieter week at Thame Bowls Club. Bad weather curtailed two games. However, in better weather, a rather unique fixture took place this week when Thame bowlers hosted a game against Wycombe Chestnuts, a group of blind and visually impaired bowlers.

Two of these bowlers, Bob Gerhardt (who recently was winner of the National Blind Bowling Pairs Championship) and Mary Pitman, who both live in Thame, are members of Thame Bowls Club and together with their helpers and ‘guides’ they brought some of their friends to take on two Triples of Thame Bowlers. The outcome was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon’s bowling played in competitive but friendly spirit, and it was only in the latter stages of the game that Thame pulled ahead to record a victory. A double fixture (home and away) is already being planned for next season.

The week at Thame finished with Finals Weekend at which 12 of the Club’s Knock-out Competitions were completed. The 2015 finals of the Men’s, Ladies and Mixed competitions were held over the weekend of 29th and 30th August – the first time that the finals had been held over 2 days rather than one. This made it a less crowded programme and certainly helped those bowlers who had managed to reach multiple finals. Six finals were played on Saturday 29th and six more on Sunday 30th. Unfortunately rain intervened on the Sunday afternoon but this did not deter the bowlers and the spectators that attended were able to watch some entertaining and competitive games.

Saturday’s programme kicked off with the final of the Men’s Taylor Cup – a competition for men who have never previously won a club singles competition. This was won by Matthew Canfield who had a convincing win over Trevor Copley. This was followed by The Ladies Ford Cup final, a drawn pairs competition, and Ann Ashfield and Maire Duncan beat Marion Keal and Marthie du Preez. The Men’s drawn pairs competition, the Victory Pairs final was played next and John Ashfield and Les Canfield were victorious against Mike Ralls and John Coward. (It’s been pointed out that by coincidence the winners are both Presidents ! – Les of course is our own President and John Ashfield is President of Chinnor Rugby Club). Next was the final of the Michael Jones competition which is the only singles event in the club open to both Men and Ladies. Casper du Preez and Caroline Walker played out a very closely fought game with Casper just coming out on top. Next up was the Men’s Jubilee Handicap singles competition which was won by Vic Brooks against John Coward playing in his second final of the day and the last final on Saturday was the Ladies 2 Wood singles which was won by Maxine Plested who beat Marthie du Preez, also playing in her second final of the day.

Sunday’s finals started with the Married Pairs Final for the Josey Cup and this was a very close game which could have gone either way but was narrowly won by Marthie and Casper du Preez beating Sharon and Paul Heafey. The Mixed Pairs final was next and this produced another thrilling game that was eventually won by a single shot with John Ashfield and Shirley Foster beating Doreen Penn and her grandson Thomas Tisbury. This was very hard luck for Doreen and Thomas as it was the second successive year that they had reached this final and both times they lost by just a single shot! The Ladies Honour Cup was next and this was another very tight game played between Ann Ashfield and Marion Keal. This competition is played over 15 ends but the scores were tied at that point with Ann just managing to draw level. So the game went to an extra end and Ann was just able to secure the win following a measure. The men’s Walker Cup was next, a 3 wood competition, and this saw John Coward playing in his third final of the weekend and he was finally able to mark up a victory with a convincing win over John Timms. This just left the two club championship singles finals to be played – the Pomeroy Cup for the Ladies and the Coronation Cup for the Men. The Ladies final saw Jill Brooks take an early lead but Marthie du Preez, playing in her fourth final of the weekend, clawed her way back into the game to lead by 14-10 after 14 ends. Jill replied decisively scoring 8 shots in the next 4 ends without reply and maintained her lead to eventually win by 21 shots to 17. The Men’s final was played between Les Canfield and Vic Brooks and was unfortunately marred by an injury to Les who slipped in the wet conditions and injured his hip. Les was unable to carry on and both players agreed to resume the match at a later date when Les has recovered. The match stands with Vic leading by 6 shots to 3 and will be continued from that point. A summary of the finals played and results follows:

Mens Taylor Cup – Matthew Canfield beat Trevor Copley 22-7
Ladies Ford Cup – Ann Ashfield & Maire Duncan beat Marion Kean & Marthie du Preez 28-18
Mens Victory Pairs – John Ashfield & Les Canfield beat Mike Ralls & John Coward 25-8

Ladies Honour Cup – Ann Ashfield beat Marion Keal 15-13
Mens Walker Cup – John Coward beat John Timms 23-10
Ladies Pomeroy Cup – Jill Brooks beat Marthie du Preez 21-17
Mens Coronation Cup – Vic Brooks leads Les Canfield 6-3 (game to be resumed to completion)

  • Thame cricketers are top of the league

THAME Town Cricket Club secured the Cherwell League division One title at the meadow this week after beating second place Great Brickhill by 69 runs leaving Thame 53 points in the lead with only 50 left to play for.

    The champions
    The champions

Both sides have been in amazing form this year winning 10 games each. Brickhill won the toss and elected to bowl and Thame produced a decent batting display with M Higgs (30) W Sutcliffe (40) H Garg (48) and J Adams (35) all making contributions. At one point Thame looked on for 300 but Iqbal John and Ahad Khan took 3 wickets each to reduce Thame to a competitive 227 for 9.

In response Thame produced another amazing display with the ball and in the field. J McPhee took 3, M Higgs took 3 and H Mushtaq took 4 as Thame bowled Great Brickhill out for 169. A fine performance in front of a big crowd meant Thame secured the league at the meadow in fitting style.

  • Busy year nearing its end for Thame Bowls club

NEARING the end of the Bowls season Thame Bowls Club continues to flourish in what has been a very busy year. Thame Ladies kept up their winning ways when they visited Aylesbury Town winning by 11 clear shots. Top Rink was that of Wendy Rawson, Ladies Captain Maire Duncan and skip Doreen Penn who won by 25 shots to 9.

    thame_bowls

Saturday’s game at home to Waddesdon was a very close match. Thame’s mixed team of 5 Triples managed to win on 3 of the 5 Rinks but lost overall to the visitors by just 18 shots. Top Rink for Thame was led by skip Mike Smith who won by 21 shots to 12. Paul Heafey and Club Captain John Timms were Thame’s other winning skips.

On Sunday Thame’s Mixed team welcomed visitors Chessvale, Chesham and this time Thame proved too strong for their opponents. The final score over the 5 Rinks was 118 shots to Thame against 75 shots. Top Rink was led by Team Captain Ron Duncan at skip, with Viv Jones, Jim Tite and Marthie DuPreez contributing to a 30 shots to 7 victory.

  • Sad beginning to a very busy week for Thame Bowls Club

IT’S been another busy week for Thame Bowls Club which started with a Mixed team travelling to The Oxford Bowls Club (formerly Oxford Rover) to play their last ever game with this old established Oxford club, which will be closing at the end of the season due to re-organisation of the Sports Ground at what is now the BMW factory. So a sad occasion but nevertheless an exciting game which the Oxford players narrowly won by just two shots.

    bowls_green_action (400x322)

Top rink for Thame was that of Marion Keal, Frances Goodyear, Brad Liddle and skip Casper DuPreez winning by 22 clear shots. On Thursday a Thame Mixed team entertained local rivals Princes Risborough and once again proved too strong for the visitors. Winning on four of the five rinks, the Thame players won by 40 clear shots, the outstanding Triple being that of Marion Keal, Jill Brooks and skip Brad Liddle who won 28 shots to 6.

On Thursday Thame Men’s League team failed to reach the final of the League Cup when they were defeated in the semi-final by Division 1 side Banbury Central A. Played at South Oxford Bowls Club, Thame put up a spirited fight and after 12 ends of the 18 ends competition were on level terms, but gradually dropped shots on three of the rinks to eventually lose by 30 shots overall. Only Graham Penn’s rink was successsful for Thame winning by 10 shots.

Friday evening at Thame saw the annual Ladies versus Gents match, always a competitive but friendly occasion. Ladies Captain Maire Duncan had six strong rinks of Ladies playing against Captain John Timms Men’s team, and after a closely fought encounter the Men’s team finally triumphed by 17 shots. Honours were even with each team winning three of the sic rinks but the top Men’s rink of new bowler Kris Warwick, Terry Emberson, Richard Plested and skip Mike Smith, proved to be the difference winning by the 17 shots margin of victory.

On Saturday a Mixed team travelled to near neighbours, Long Crendon, for a five Rinks match, and once again Thame came out winners of a closely contested match by just nine shots. Winning skips Les Canfield ably assisted by Margaret Boynton, John Wheeler and Bill Giles, and Graham Penn supported by Thomas Tisbury, John Walker, and Hazel Westcott, proved to be the difference between these two closely matched sides.

On Sunday morning Thame Ladies travelled to Oxford City & County to play their semi final of the Top Club competition. Although Hazel Westcott got the Thame Ladies off to a winning start in the Singles match, in the other three matches consisting of Pairs, Triples and Fours the Thame Ladies were all narrowly beaten by their much more experienced opponents.

A very full week for the Thame bowlers finished on Sunday, August 16, with the annual Men’s drawn pairs competition, the Potter Cup. Ten pairs of bowlers competed for this trophy on a ’round robin’ basis, and at the end of a closely contested competition, the eventual winners were Matthew Canfield and Vic Brooks.

  • Late goal robs Thame of win against Binfield

BINFIELD performed the perfect ‘smash and grab’ raid as a late goal from Danny Horscroft took the points back to Berkshire from yesterday, Tuesday’s match at Thame.

Ben Gray, who scored Thame's single goal against Binfield
Ben Gray, who scored Thame’s single goal against Binfield

United went in to the game with the only changes from the team that beat Milton United on Saturday being Andy Gledhill replacing the unavailable Craig Faulconbridge, and Phil Pykett starting for the injured Luke Ricketts. After a quiet opening, it was United who almost broke the deadlock on 12 minutes when a Henry Owen header from a Shannon Jesson corner was clawed on to the post by Silver before being cleared for another corner. That corner was then headed over by Ellis Hercules from eight yards.

However, Binfield took the lead on 18 minutes when a long ball was met by Khalid Sensussi who beat his marker before placing a left foot shot beyond Farrow in the Thame goal. United pressed forward to get back in to the game, and went closest firstly through Gledhill, whose powerful effort from 18 yards went just wide, before Hercules saw a long range effort just miss the target.

Whatever was said by manager Mark West at half time worked, as United pressed from the off for the equaliser. And it should have arrived in the first five minutes of the half when, firstly, Ben Gray saw a shot come back off the cross bar, before another Hercules header went wide. The equaliser almost followed on 72 minutes when a Jesson free kick evaded everyone, with Hercules unable to get a meaningful touch. United eventually got on the score sheet in the 78th minute when, following a goal mouth scramble, Gray was able to head in to an open goal from five yards.

At this point the momentum seemed to be with United, but it was Binfield who pressed and, with four minutes to go and with only their second meaningful attempt on goal in the game, Horscroft was on hand to head a corner home at the far post. With the clock ticking, United were unable to find a second equaliser with the result met with frustration from both the management team and supporters.

    United:
Farrow, Evans, Dugmore, Hercules, Owen, Kedzierski, Connelly, Jesson, (West) Gledhill, Gray (Yearwood), Pykett (Johnston)

Although Thomas and Jonathan narrowly lost their early singles matches, Matthew progressed to round two before being beaten. Thomas Tisbury, the youngest of the trio at just 14 years-old, reached the semi-finals of the Pairs competition in which he was drawn with a young lady from Wiltshire.

Congratulations to all of them – the future looks good for Thame Bowls Club.

  • Winning season opener for Thame United

FOR the first time in six years, Thame United secured three points on the opening day of the season as they defeated Milton United 1-0 in a game that United controlled from start to finish.

Not only did manager Mark West give full debuts to Henry Owen, Craig Faulconbridge and Nick Dugmore, he also introduced a new 3-5-2 formation. And it did not take long for the Thame players to adapt to the formation as they dominated the opening exchanges, albeit chances were few and far between. Indeed the best chance in the opening quarter came after only four minutes when a cross from Shannon Jesson beat the home keeper and came back off the post before being cleared to safety.

The next chance did not arrive until the 32nd minute when a free kick in to the box was met by the head of Ellis Hercules whose powerful header was pushed over the bar by Griffiths. Jesson then went close three minutes later with a strike that went wide of the goal, before United failed to take advantage of a goal mouth scramble in the 39th minute.

Henry Owen, who scored the winning goal for Thame on Saturday
Henry Owen, who scored the winning goal for Thame on Saturday

With the game score less at half time, United eventually broke the deadlock three minutes in to the second half. A Jesson free kick from the right was met by a combination of Hercules and Owen with the latter getting the final touch and heading the ball beyond Griffiths. It was no less than United deserved and Ben Gray nearly extended the lead four minutes later, with a header at the far post pushed wide by a defender. Faulconbridge then forced an excellent save from Griffiths on 73 minutes, pushing a shot around the post from an acute angle, before a similar Jesson effort was also pushed wide on 85 minutes.

Indeed, it was only in the last five minutes that the home side put United under any real pressure – up until which time the back three of Owen, Hercules and Dugmore had marshalled the home strikers well. Even then Lee Farrow in the Thame goal, was rarely troubled as United held on for the three points.
Next up for United are Binfield, who visit the ASM Stadium on Tuesday night (11/08), 7:45pm kick off.

    United:
Farrow, Evans, Dugmore, Hercules, Owen, Kedzierski (Stowe), Connelly, Jesson, Faulconbridge, Gray (House), Ricketts (Pykett).

  • A good week for Thame green bowlers

THAME Bowls Club Ladies kept up their winning ways on Tuesday at home to Henley Ladies, winning convincingly on all three Rinks. The overall score was 76 shots to 34 in Thame’s favour, the highest rink score being that of Viv Jones, Maureen Giles and Marthie DuPreez who won by 27 shots.

womens-bowls (377x400)The mid-week Mixed team entertained five Triples from Chesham on Wednesday and Thame’s stand-in Captain for the day, John Hurley, led his team to a nine shot win in a very close fought encounter. It was the winning rink of relatively new bowler John Walker, Maureen Giles and skip Gerry Barry who won convincingly by 26 shots to 6 that carried Thame to victory.

Thame Men’s League team had a rare success at home on Thursday defeating Charlbury on all four Rinks to gain a six points to nil win. However, this win is too late to save the Thame Men from being relegated to Division Three of the Oxford & District Bowls League next year.

On Saturday (August 1) Thame hosted a six Triples Mixed game against Bicester and lost by the narrowest of margins 106 shots to 110. Played in tremendous spirit and with friendly banter between these old rivals, an enjoyable afternoon was had by one and all. Thame’s highest winning rink was that of Marion Keal, Leonard Grimshaw and skip Trevor Copley who won by 21 shots to 8. Other winners for Thame were skips Les Canfield and Jesse Matthews in this close-fought encounter.

Thame finished their weeks’ activities with another close match but this time with victory over neighbours Watlington. The Sunday Mixed team continued their good season with a 98 to 88 shots victory at Watlington. Top Rink for Thame was led by skip Casper DuPreez with John Hurley, Christine Liddle and Maureen Giles lending their support in the 30 shots to 12 victory.

  • Thame bowls club weekly update

THAME Bowls Club’S midweek Mixed team were involved in a very close game against Bassetsbury, winning on two of the four Rinks but losing overall by just three shots – 65 – 68.

    bowls_tennis_club_sign (400x267)

Top Rink for Thame was that of Ian Rutherford, Simon Bell and skip Gerry Barry, who when leading 20 shots to 10 had to end their game at the request of the opposing Bassetsbury skip. Their next game bought success to the midweek squad reversing the recent poor result against Waddesdon, with a comprehensive 102 shots to 71 shots victory at Thame. Winning on four of the five Rinks, Thame’s top Rink was that of Peter Southam, Jonathan Dadson and skip Maxine Plested.

Thame Men’s league team suffered another defeat, this time at Adderbury. However, the highlight of the match was a ‘Hotshot’ (all 8 woods scoring) by the Thame Four of Les Canfield, Leonard Grimshaw, Casper DuPreez and skip Paul Heafey which helped them to be the only winning Rink out of the four for Thame on the night.

Thame’s Six Rinks return Mixed match at home against Desborough on Saturday, July 25, saw a reversal of the result of the recent match at Maidenhead where Thame lost on three Rinks. This time Thame won on five Rinks and won comfortably overall by 137 shots to 89. Top Rink for Thame was that of Jill Brooks, John Wheeler, Les Canfield and skip Graham Penn who won by 17 shots.

The six Rinks Mixed game at Hazells on Sunday, July 26, was curtailed by rain, but after bowling only eight ends, Thame were already leading by 19 shots overall so were heading for another successful outcome.
