  • 19/09/12……Championship medal for Thame cycling veteran

A THAME cyclist did his club and his town proud recently when he won a Bronze medal at the British Time Trial Championships in Nottingham.

John Francis, 63, who lives on Lea Park in Thame, is a member of the High Wycombe Cycling Club which includes several members from Thame, including the club’s President. John came third in his class in the BTCC Masters G category, covering a course of over 25k, including a very steep hill finish up to Belvoir Castle, in 53 ins 54 secs.

John was beaten into third place by Robert Wilson of
Glasgow Couriers, who beat him by just six seconds with a time of 52:48. The Gold medalist was Peter Greenwood of Clayton Velo club, with a winning time of 50:43.

John will receive his engraved medal at the Champions Gala Dinner event later in the year, when the Guest of Honour will be cycling hero, Stephen Roche, who is one of only two cyclists ever to win the Triple Crown of victories in the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia stage races, plus the World road race championship.

John’s success at National level has been mirrored at Club level, where he was this year’s top points scorer in the club’s Time Trials Evening League.

  • 17/09/2012….Defeat for Chinnor in high-scoring tussle

MATCH REPORT (Contributed) for National 2S match on Saturday (15/09) – Chinnor RFC (away) 29 Vs Bournemouth 41.

CHINNOR’S second away match in succession saw them lose 41-29 to Bournemouth on Saturday. With the previous match?s wingers not available, Tristan Corpe and Pip Seymour came into the side. Jordan Wood made his first full start of the season. With Tom Mowbray still injured, Liam Gilbert moved to the second row.

Straight from the kick-off, Bournemouth immediately pressurised the Chinnor 22. On five minutes, Frazer Wilford touched down for the first of Bournemouth?s six tries of the day, and fly half Ben Stevenson converted to give the home side a 7-0 lead. Chinnor bounced back on the 11th minute where two phases of play from a 22 restart saw Corpe touchdown for an unconverted try. Stevenson, for Bournemouth, increased the home side?s lead to 10-5 with a well-struck penalty goal on the 18th minute.

On the 21st minute, from a simple ball from a scrum, Bournemouth?s Scott Chislett powered over the line to increase the Bournemouth lead to 15-5. Stevenson improved the score to 17-5. Then, On the 36th minute, Chinnor failed to control a scrum in front of their posts. From the resultant turnover scrum, the ball was passed to Dan Pollard who skipped over for Bournemouth?s third try. Stevenson again converted to improve the home lead to 24-5 at half-time.

Just four minutes after the restart, Chinnor replaced Ian stock with Joe Winpenny and Sam Stoop with Huw Morgan. The first try of the second half came on the 52nd minute courtesy of a Chinnor pushover try with Joe Kava touching down for the visitors to reduce Bournemouth?s lead to 24-10. Five minutes later, after a period of pressure from Bournemouth in the Chinnor corner, a grubber kick allowed Dunkerley to dot down for Bournemouth?s bonus point try. Stevenson again converted to increase the lead to 31-10.

Chinnor then had a mini revival with two tries in quick succession. The first was from Matt Goode which was converted by Colver with Cathcart having left the field. The second came from Tristan Corpe, after turnover ball in the Chinnor 22 allowed a breakout and long kick downfield from Leo Fielding. Chinnor had now closed the gap to 31-22

It then all went wrong for Chinnor. Straight from the restart, they conceded a soft try with Featherstone collecting the ball and cantering unopposed over the line for Bournemouth?s fifth try. Amazingly, Stevenson failed with the conversion, rattling the upright instead, leaving the score at 36-22. Chinnor looked certain to be scoring in the corner when the ball squirted out and was collected by Hardcastle who ran the length of the pitch to score Bournemouth?s final try of the day.

With five minutes to go, Chinnor were not quite out of it. A line out from a penalty kick resulted in quick ball to Colver in the centre who burst over to score a bonus point try for Chinnor. Converting his own try, Colver finished the match for a 41-29 victory to Chinnor.

Solid work from the Bournemouth pack underpinned much of the good work leading to most of the Bournemouth scores. Stevenson was the puppet master, conducting the game with intelligent direction and masterly kicking. The best team clearly won.

Chinnor will be annoyed with their defensive frailties and will rue giving away two very soft tries which might otherwise made the contest much closer. Former Chinnor youth player, Jordan Wood, on his full debut caught the eye with his work rate. Joe Pickett had a good game and the lineout functioned well.

  • 17/09/12…..Thame through to Vase first round

MATCH REPORT: FA Carlsberg Vase Second – Qualifying Round – Thame United 3, Buckingham Athletic 2 – THAME UNITED progressed to the FA Vase first round proper at the ASM Stadium on Saturday (15/09) when they defeated a physical Buckingham Athletic side 3-2. They conceded two soft goals in a close first half but then dominated the game after the restart.

The visitors opened the scoring three minutes into the game when a low corner beat Thame defenders, allowing visiting striker, Phil Martin, to tap in from close range. For a while Buckingham were creating the chances and had two near misses before United recovered to equalise in the 13th minute. The goal came from United?s first corner when the ball was only half cleared and a subsequent shot was blocked only to be followed up by another shot which the keeper parried but the ball ran lose to Alex Stewart who quickly turned and fired home from 10-Yards.

United were beginning to settle and creating some good chances when they again conceded a goal from a corner. This time the ball appeared to cross the goal line direct from the in-swinging corner kick, although it may have got a slight touch. United countered and equalised in the final minute of the first half. Long throw specialist, Matt Willet, hurled the ball into the penalty area and it was knocked out to Connor Hayes whose first time shot was deflected down to bounce over the keeper into the roof of the net.

A few minutes after the restart, willet forced a good save when the visiting keeper tipped the ball over the bar. United took the lead in the 57th minute when Ben Connelly passed the ball to Willet ?on the overlap? and he hit a perfect cross to Stewart, who confidently headed his second goal home from 5-yards. Thame were in control and, although goalkeeper Lee Farrow made some routine saves, the visitors never looked like equalising. At the other end Connelly, Stewart and Hayes went close to increasing United?s lead.

The next round is scheduled for October 15, when Thame will be at home to either Fairford Town or Hook Norton, who drew on Saturday.

    Bob Dixon

  • 11/09/12……Try bonanza for Chinnor RFC seconds

MATCH REPORT – The Shield – Division 2N – Chinnor 90 vs 10 Thurrock; CHINNOR seconds, playing in the Zoo Shield Division 2 North, welcomed Thurrock RFC to Kingsey for the first league game of the season.

This was the first time Thurrock and Chinnor had met after Thurrock?s promotion to the division this year. With Chinnor RFC first team being promoted to National 2 South this season, the club have managed to attract a healthy number of new players. This showed in the team selected, with five new players in an already very strong second team. The side always welcomed two forwards, Evan Sawyer and Jack Horward, and three back line players, Neil and Paul Davies and ‘grease lightning’ Leo Fielding. Many of this team will compete for first team places in an already strong outfit – a great problem for the club to have!

On a very hot afternoon, in at least 28 degrees, the game started with the home side forwards dominating and getting the first points on the board with a try by Adam Hastings. The game then settled down with both teams attacking and defending and trying to settle and gel as a team. Thurrock added the next points shortly afterwards with a penalty. It then took twenty minutes for Chinnor to get their second try, scored by Trevor Powell, taking the lead to 10 points to three. Chinnor then started to string the phases together with forward and backs working well together and in the space of fifteen minutes, ran in three tries by Leo Fielding, Neil Davies and Tristan Corpe, two of which were converted by Will Millett. By this point, the lead increased to 31 points to three. Just on half time, Thurrock cut the lead with a converted try of their own and the half finished 31 points to 10 and Chinnor with a try bonus point.

Thurrock was disadvantaged with only one player on the bench, whilst Chinnor sported four, and so it proved to be a very long second half for Thurrock. Chinnor then ran in another nine tries; Huw Morgan two, Sam Angell two, with Leo Fielding, Adam Hastings, Evan Sawyer, Tristan Corpe and Trevor Powell each scoring seconds tries. The successful boot of Sam Angell made seven conversions. The final score was 90 points to 10.

Carol Bradbrook-Taylor, Chinnor RFC’s Honoury Secretary, said: “This was an outstanding performance by the team with some great individual performances as well. The game was watched by the full first team, as well as an encouraging crowd who were full of praise for second team, and for the depth of talent that we have in our squad this year.”

As ‘the seconds’ were playing their game, other home fixtures were going on simultaneously.

Chinnor ‘thirds’ played Windsor ‘seconds’, establishing a good lead. However, Windsor later took over the game beating Chinnor by only one point.

Chinnor Oxen (Vets) battle to beat Aylesbury thirds, 27 – 5.

Carol concluded: “All three games were very entertaining, showing the depth of senior rugby at Chinnor by being able to put out five teams involving over 130 senior players, as well as a proper route from Junior to Senior rugby from the 17 ? 21 year olds.”

If you fancy pulling out your boots and having a run around, all are welcome to the Senior training sessions held every Tuesday and Thursday evening from 19.30.

    Next Saturday?s Fixtures (15/09):

1sts Bournemouth away National League 2 South
2nds Redingensians Home The Shield – Division 2N
3rds Redingensians away BBO Division 1
4ths Gosford All Blacks 2s BBO North

  • 10/09/12…Thame beat newly promoted Highmoor

MATCH REPORT – League match – 08/09/12 – Highmoor Ibis 1, Thame United 3. THAME UNITED returned from Reading on Saturday with three points, having defeated Highmoor Ibis 1-3. It was the first time the two clubs have met as Highmoor are recently promoted, having finished runners up in Division One, East last season. The game was played on a hot afternoon in Palmer Park Stadium, on a large pitch surrounded by both an athletics and a cycling track. Thame were without several first team regulars including goalkeeper Lee Farrow but his stand in, Josh Cockrell, had a good game.

Thame took the lead in the sixth minute, when after a foul on Luke Ricketts, Meredith Mitchell met a low Dan West free kick with a left footed six-yard strike into the corner of the goal. The home side had a good chance to equalise a few minutes later when a striker rounded the advancing keeper, leaving the goal undefended, but he inexplicably missed the target. United increased their lead on 34 minutes when a pass from newcomer Charlie Conner found Stuart Barr on the edge on the area in enough space to pick his spot and hit a strong shot into the corner. The home side went down to ten men just before the break when a midfield player was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

Highmore scored shortly after the restart when a defensive slip allowed striker Devontae Romeo to fire home from 15 yards, giving Cockrell no chance. Spurred on by the goal, the home side pressurised the Thame goal for a while and Cockrell was busy. United?s third came with 25 minutes remaining when West hit a great free kick into the box and Ellis Hercules did well to head home from eight yards. Both managers brought on subs and midfielder Darren Peverill, recently signed from Chinnor, replaced Barr ?up front?, but the remainder of the game was uneventful as both sides tired in the heat.

Thame United: Cockrell, Willett, Hall, Meredith, Hercules, Hayes, Connelly, West, Barr (Peverill), Conner (N Rhodes), Ricketts.

NEXT SATURDAY, September 15, Thame United are at home in the second qualifying round of the F A Vase when they meet Buckingham Athletic at ASM Stadium.

  • 04/09/12…..Chinnor RFC take max points in first match of the season

CHINNOR Rugby club, based in Thame, played their first 1st Team match of the season on Saturday, following their promotion from level five rugby to level four. They gained the maximum five points, beating Launceston on their home turf. This takes Chinnor to thirdplace in the table.

MATCH REPORT: Chinnor’s ‘Never say die’ attitude snatches victory in Cornwall – Newly promoted to this league, Chinnor?s long trip to Launceston for the first match of the season proved fruitful as the boys from Thame returned 33-29 winners.

The game started badly for Chinnor when tight head prop Pickett was sin binned after just 45 seconds for unnecessary foul play. The first score of the day came from Launceston?s highly influential Lewis Patterson who ran in a simple try after a missed tackle. With the conversion from Kieron Lewitt , Launceston (whose 1st XV go by the nickname of Cornish All Blacks) went 7-0 ahead on the 10th minute.

Four minutes later, Cathcart, with a penalty goal, scored Chinnor?s first points of the afternoon. In the 18th minute, a downfield kick was fielded by Goode who set off on a mazy run through the defence. A quick offload to Gilbert and an inside pass saw the supporting Colver dot down for Chinnor?s first try. Cathcart?s conversion gave the visitors a 10-7 lead.

The try of the match came in the 24th minute from a Chinnor line out some 30 metres from the Cornish All Blacks line. Quick ball off the top saw a rapid flat passing movement get the ball into Gray?s hands on the wing. His scorching pace left the defence for dead to score Chinnor?s second try of the afternoon for a 15-7 lead.

Launceston then began to pile on the pressure and set up camp on the Chinnor line. The pressure eventually told and Patterson scored his and the All Blacks second try. Lewitt?s conversion reduced the Chinnor lead to 15-14 at half time.

Eight minutes into the second half, Lewitt restored the All Blacks lead to 17-15 with a penalty goal. Launceston again pulverised the Chinnor line who held firm for a considerable period until Patterson broke the deadlock with his hat-trick try on the 53rd minute to further increase the home lead to 22-15.

Chinnor, not dismayed by this period of considerable pressure stuck to their swashbuckling approach to the game. Chinnor?s Chase attempted to get free down the left wing but some foul play in the tackle saw Launceston?s Lewitt sent to the bin for 10 minutes. At the line out from the resultant penalty kick, Chinnor lost the ball but managed to partially charge down the attempted clearance kick. The ball was moved to Stoop who slipped Goode in for a powerful run to the line for Chinnor?s third try on the 58th minute. Cathcart?s conversion was a formality to level the match at 22-22.

Just one minute later, Launceston infringed on the centre spot. Cathcart?s towering penalty kick gave Chinnor a 25-22 lead.

Disaster struck Chinnor in the 69th minute with a charged down kick. The ball bounced comfortably for Launceston?s Friend to pick up and slowly stroll unopposed to the line for the home side?s fourth try. Lewitt?s conversion gave Launceston a 29-25 lead with 10 minutes to play.

Chinnor reacted boldly to the setback. They attempted to run the ball at every opportunity and their efforts saw them awarded a penalty some 30 metres out when the All Blacks Richard Bright was sin binned for slapping the ball away in a three on one overlap. Cathcart duly slotted to reduce the match score to 29-28 in favour of Launceston.

Chinnor continued to look for gaps and Chase touched down wide out on the left for it to be harshly ruled out. This only served to galvanise Chinnor. From forward play wide on the right, Jordan Wood carried the ball strongly through several tackles. The ball was whipped from the ruck and an extravagantly long miss pass found Chase at full pace scoring in the left hand corner on the 78th minute to give the boys from Thame a 33-29 bonus point victory.

This was a most entertaining match with the lead changing hands several times. The result could have gone either way. The difference was perhaps Chinnor?s never say die attitude. At several points in the match, Chinnor was put on under enormous pressure by the home side and the match seemed as though it was beginning to drift away from them. They never gave in and their boldness ultimately brought them victory.

The kicking of Launceston?s Lewitt and Webber will trouble any side and in Lewis Patterson they possess a real attacking talent. Although there were individual contributions of great merit for Chinnor, this performance was a team effort and the victory was forged from boldness and belief.

    Scorers:
    Chinnor: Colver T; Gray T; Goode T; Chase T; Cathcart 2C, 3PG
Launceston: Patterson 3T; Friend T; Lewitt 3C, PG

    Chinnor team:
Colver, Gray, Goode, Stoop, Chase, Cathcart, Jones, Stock (Berry 67), Tattersall, Pickett (Whelan 67), Blewitt (Wood 62), Smith, Gilbert, Williams, Kava

  • 04/09/12…..REMINDER to all swimmers! Thame Rotary Swimathon

THE preparations for the first edition of the Rotary Thame Swimathon are under way. Inspired by the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, the event will take place at Thame Leisure Centre on Sunday, October 7, 2012, between 10am and 3pm.

This is a fun and fundraising event on behalf of local charities: Mayor of Thame?s Charity Appeal (2012-2013), Sharing Life Trust and SERV, and also Thame & District Day Centre, Chiltern and Thames Valley Air Ambulance and Hearing Dogs for Deaf People.

    Sponsors

The event is possible due to the generosity of several local businesses. ALR Services, ASM Auto Recycling, Thame Leisure Centre, Park Street Dental Clinic and Racquets Fitness Centre. Vale Life Magazine will cover the cost of hiring the pool, whilst PSG Trophies will cover the cost of producing the medals. Abbotts Office Solutions and Silent View Windows sponsored the blue Rotary T-shirts which will be worn by the volunteers organising the event.

Rotarian, Marius Ciortan, who Chairs the Rotary Swimathon Steering Group, said: ?We have received a great response and support from the local businesses and groups. Brothers of Thame, Lightfoots and Chinnor Cubs will participate whilst Lord Williams? School, Thame Swimming Club and other groups are also likely to send swimmers.”

    Who can take part?

?Everyone over the age of eight can take part,” explained Marius. “More local groups and businesses have been contacted and are expected to participate. We hope the Rotary Swimathon will be repeated year-on-year and be part of the 2012 Olympic legacy.

?We are looking for another 15 teams of up to six swimmers. Each team is given a lane of the pool and will swim for 55 minutes ? with only one team member swimming at a time. To avoid disappointment we advise the teams to complete their entry forms as soon as possible.

?On average this means that each swimmer does about 10-20 lengths during the 55 minutes, but there is no need for each team member to swim the same number of lengths.

“Teams seek sponsorship for taking part in the Rotary Swimathon by raising a lump sum or based on the team?s total number of lengths swum – which can be up to 100 lengths or more.

?The benefits are for everyone, as local charities get money to help with their important work and the swimmers have lots of fun trying to swim as many lengths as they can. At the end all participants will get a Rotary Swimathon medal.?

Prospective teams should apply now as the slots are allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Team entry and sponsorship forms can be downloaded from www.thame.rotaryweb.org/ or by ringing Rotarian Peter Hook on 07836 651174 or e-mail: peterghook@hotmail.com

  • 28/08/12…..Thame United ‘blown away’ by North Leigh

FA cup Preliminary Round – 25/08/12 – North Leigh 6, Thame United 0 – MATCH REPORT

THAME United were ?blown away? by a more skilful side at North Leigh on Saturday when they were defeated 6-0. The hosts are mid table in the Southern League division one (South and West) which is a league higher than Thame. Fairy tales do happen in the FA Cup, when a higher league team are defeated by minnow but, on Saturday, Thame were simply outclassed by a better team.

Although Thame started brightly the home side soon started to gain control and went ahead in the 16th minute when a soft penalty was awarded. Ellis Hercules was harshly judged to have fowled in the box and Stuart Hole buried the spot kick. After 24 minutes a sloppy Thame pass was intercepted near the halfway line, and after a brief passing move, John Mills hit a well placed 15-yard shot pass Thame keeper Lee Farrow. With ten minutes of the first half remaining it was 3-0 when Jimmy Deabill headed in a cross from the right from 5-yards. Up to this point United had been playing with only one striker, but after the third goal Mark West brought the hard working Cameron Lagan on to partner Alex Stewart. Just before the break Ben Connelly played a ball to Lagan whose acutely angled shot was just wide.

United came out fired up after the break but it was business as usual for the home side in the 59th minute when the impressive Mills beat two Thame defenders to score the home team?s fourth. Deabill got their 5th goal from 12-yards a few minutes later. North Leigh went down to 10 men with about 5 minutes to play when, having used all their substitutes a defender limped off the pitch. With 2 minutes left Lewis Coyle completed Thame?s misery by scoring the home side?s 6th goal.

It must be said that goalkeeper Lee Farrow was not at fault for any of the goals. In fact he made some fine saves which minimised the damage.

Thame United: Farrow, Willett, Hall, Meredith, Hercules (Evans), N Rhodes, Connelly, West, Stewart (Rantle), Wakelin (Lagan), Ricketts.

United play in the FA Vase at the ASM Stadium next Saturday (1st September), when they meet Hampshire Premier League team Clanfield.
