GOOD exam results? Then don?t ruin your future with a criminal record, warned the police today.

Thames Valley Police are urging young people to celebrate safely when their GCSE results come through on Thursday (27/0809).

The Police want to be sure the party mood stays positive, but they want to emphasize that it is against the law for anyone aged under 18 to buy alcohol, or for alcohol to be bought for them to consume in public.

They warn that if you are caught drinking in a public place, you can have your alcohol seized by a police officer, and anyone found drunk, committing an assault or causing criminal damage could be arrested, spend a night in the police cells and face a court appearance in the morning. Many employers refuse to take on people with a criminal record.

Inspector John Fox, from Thames Valley Police local policing department, said: “Underage drinking not only causes nuisance behaviour such as litter and loud noise, it can also lead to mindless criminal damage and, even worse, it can make young people vulnerable to injury, assault, and unsafe sexual activity.”

Officers will be carrying out targeted patrols and stepping up test purchasing in shops and off-licences when the GCSE results are released. Retailers caught selling alcohol to under-eighteens will be prosecuted.
