  • Rocketman – Christmas ‘cracker’ at Thame Cinema

** UPDATE; Thame Cinema 4 All is putting on an extra, earlier screening of Rocketman as the evening show is now pretty well booked. Doors open 3.30, film begins 4pm **

FROM the opening sequence, in which Taron Egerton’s Elton John strides into rehab in full stage regalia – demonic horns, wings, orange lycra catsuit, platforms, the works – and declares himself addicted to pretty much everything on the list, you will be hooked.

Dexter Fletcher’s sensational rock opera tells the story of how Reggie Dwight became Elton John and how Elton John almost came a cropper as he succumbed to sensational success, stratospheric fame, endless temptations and the consequences of excess. Told as a series of key episodes from John’s life, we learn about Reggie’s suburban childhood, his troubled relationships with his mother and his estranged father, his gift for songwriting, his creative partnership with Bernie Taupin (Jamie Bell), and in particular his love affairs and his substance abuse, with the inevitable loneliness, isolation and near death experiences that ensue. Taron Egerton is breathtakingly good, with support from a sterling cast.

Scored and choreographed with numbers from Elton’s glorious musical catalogue, his songs become narrative devices that perfectly frame the story of his incredible life – it’s as if he wrote them for this very purpose. A riotous, dazzling and moving portrait of a rare talent, a deeply troubled but ultimately transcendent pop star.

  • Public offered free Counter Terrorism training

AN award-winning counter terrorism training course is being made available to the public for the first time and Thames Valley Police want you to sign up and help protect the UK.

Devised by CT officers and security experts, the ACT Awareness e-Learning package was previously only available to staff working in crowded places like shopping centres and entertainment venues.

Now Counter Terrorism Policing has decided to open up the training to anyone who wants to become a CT Citizen so they can learn how to spot the signs of suspicious behaviour and understand what to do in the event of a major incident.

The programme was originally devised in partnership with retail giant Marks and Spencer – and participants needed to be signed up by their employers. Today the online learning is available free of charge to anyone who wants to take part.

The decision to offer the training to the public was not made in response to the recent attack in London. However, the tragic events which took place just 10 days ago, when two people lost their lives to terrorism, were a stark reminder of the ongoing threat and the need for vigilance.

“ACT Awareness e-Learning is especially useful for anyone working in or regularly visiting crowded places,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Richard List.

“We developed each stage alongside industry experts and to date over one and a half million modules have been completed. The course has been so popular, with nine out of 10 users saying they would recommend it, we want to open it up to as many people as possible.

“The threat level remains at Substantial – meaning an attack is likely – so giving everyone the chance to be extra eyes and ears for police and local security teams help to keep all communities across the Thames Valley safe.

“The festive period is obviously a very busy one – so this is a good time to join up and become a CT Citizen.”

ACT Awareness is made up of seven modules that take a few minutes each to complete. You can pause and re-join at any time. In total it takes just 45 minutes – so less than an hour of your time could help to prevent an attack or help save lives if one was to happen.

The course is hosted by online training specialists Highfield. To register and start learning, click here

  • Thame students hold their own ‘general election’

AS the nation went to the polls, students at Lord Williams’s School in Thame had already cast their votes – revealing a slightly different result than that of the official general election.

In a series of year group assemblies, students were presented with each of the four main party manifestos: Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrats and Greens.
A brief overview of the democratic history of voting and importance of using your vote was explained. Students then had the opportunity to cast their votes on ballot sheets and post their votes in ballot boxes. Jon Ryder, Head Teacher at LWS was delighted with the exercise: “We encourage our students to be informed about the wider world and to become active citizens.

“The school general election has been a fantastic example of democracy in action and a great tool to engage political awareness” he said.

  • Chinnor ‘win ugly’ at Moseley

FOLLOWING Chinnor RFC’s win at Birmingham Moseley on Saturday, December 7, Matt Williams has praised his side’s ability to win ugly, as Chinnor continued their fine run of form.

A 22-17 victory at Birmingham Moseley on Saturday saw the Thame-based side go six games unbeaten and climb to fourth in National League 1. It proved a physical battle in the West Midlands where Chinnor were forced to play out the final moments on their own try-line.

The visitors made a phenomenal start and led 17-0 after 20 minutes. Moseley slowly cut the deficit through four penalties and Morgan Dawes’ unconverted try brought the sides level after 68 minutes. But Chinnor responded brilliantly with Jason Worrall crossing for his second score of the game, before they saw out a nail-biting final few moments.

It was another tense battle and director of rugby Matt Williams was delighted to leave Billesley Common with four points. “We love giving the paying punters a game at Chinnor,” he said. “What can I say? It wasn’t pretty; it was very scrappy; there were a lot of penalties, but we were incredible for the first 18 minutes.”

“Don’t get me wrong, Moseley then woke up but it was a huge game, both teams putting in some massive hits with two big packs. Moseley had obviously come back with their strong group of forwards. I know they have been struggling and it was good to see a lot of those boys back on the pitch. But I said to the guys before the game that it wasn’t going to be the Moseley we had done our analysis on, and that it was going to be a real battle – that’s exactly what it was.

“If you’re going to turn a corner, if you’re going to go on a roll, you have to be able to win ugly and we really won ugly.”

Chinnor finish 2019 with back-to-back home games. They welcome Darlington Mowden Park to Kingsey Road this Saturday, before hosting Richmond on December 21.

  • CCTV images could help find purse thieves

THAMES Valley Police has released CCTV images of two men who officers would like to speak to following a theft in Thame, when a woman was robbed of her purse.

At around 12.50pm on Tuesday, November 5, the victim, a woman in her seventies, was watched by a man as she used her chip and pin card to pay for her shopping in Waitrose, Thame. He then followed her out of the shop and waited until she got into her vehicle before getting her attention to tell her someone had hit the back of her car and that he would show her the damage.
