  • Appeal to MP to support ‘meaningful vote’ thwarted

AHEAD of the vote in Parliament later today for an amendment giving Parliament ‘a meaningful vote’ in the event of no Brexit deal, a Thame group has met with John Howell MP hoping to gain his support for the amendment.

The meeting was not a positive one according to Robin storey, of Open Britain Thame, who spoke to John Howell. Robin told Thame.net: “John Howell MP has another chance to vote for an amendment giving a ‘meaningful vote’ for parliament today in the event of no Brexit deal. I am asking everyone – please email your MP again. Parliamentary sovereignty – no Parliament can pass law that future parliaments cannot change – is a basic constitutional principle and MPs were lied to last week.

    John Howell MP

“I met John Howell MP last week and he was in full denial mode and clearly hoping to bash on supporting Theresa May, regardless of what his remain voting constituents think, or the growing evidence of damage to his constituency and the country. Hard Irish border- not a problem; split cabinet? just the media; economic damage predicted – Treasury modelled the wrong scenario; Conservative Party in thrall to Jacob Rees-Mogg – what could I mean?”

Robin concluded: “Please get along to this Saturday’s march in London – or you could stay at home and look for the NHS Brexit dividend. There isn’t going to be a more important political issue for a generation – so get on the train or join the Oxford for Europe bus. See you in Pall Mall 12 noon.”

  • A month with Zero burglaries in the Thame area !

THAMES Valley Police has seen another drop in Burglaries, both Dwelling and non-Dwellings (sheds /outbuildings) in comparison to the same period last year across the Thame sector with zero crimes reported in every category. The Thame neighbourhood team have put this down in part to their continued hard work promoting Crime Reduction Advice and targeted patrols.

In its latest monthly update  for May 2018, the community policing team report also has good news about rural crime: “Due to proactive patrols and operations organised by the Thame Neighbourhood Policing Team, reports of rural crime have dramatically fallen since January 2018, which is great news. Rural crime does still remain a priority for the Thame Neighbourhood Team. PCSO Ryan Dollery still commits 50% of his work time to rural crime patrols and engagement which includes frequent visits to farms and rural locations.”

Another one of the team’s priorities is Antisocial Behaviour (ASB) in and around Thame town at night. About this aspect of policing the town, the report states: “The neighbourhood team continue to patrol the town and engage with the youths. Warning letters have been issued to many youths with vehicles advising them to ensure they are not driving in an anti-social manner.  Additionally the youths are being advised to keep their music to a minimum when parked up and to be respectful to other members of the public. The Thame neighbourhood team have future operations planned which are aimed at detecting anti-social behaviour and crime in and around the Thame area at night.”

On May 12, the Thame PCSOs issued a driver with a S59 Warning after witnessing him drive in an anti-social manner on Southern Road in Thame.

The event was hosted by Jeremy Quin MP, a former Swan board member who is now chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Credit Unions.

Jeremy Quin MP said: “As a former Board member of the Swan Credit Union, I know from first-hand experience how important their work is: encouraging savings and offering affordable credit to those who can otherwise pay exorbitant rates to non-bank lenders. A spokesperson for Swan Credit Union said: “The Board of Swan Credit Union were extremely pleased to receive this grant, which will help to support our continuing expansion and the development of our services to members. It will also provide for an independent review of our future back office service provision to cater for our planned growth..”

The back office review will be carried out by Coventry and Warwickshire Co-operative Development Agency. It will be used to inform the strategy being developed to improve the services provided by Swan in North Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes and South Oxfordshire. • A ‘Green Living Plan’ for Thame

A plan to make sure that a rapidly changing Thame remains a green, pleasant and healthy place to live and work, is to be presented to the town council .

A draft ‘Green Living Plan’ has been formulated by a group of local volunteers, RSA Thame, on behalf of the Town Council to look at how things that we all rely upon, such as the quality of our air and water, or the energy that we all use, can be maintained and improved.

The RSA Thame group will brief Councillors on the preparation of the plan and present the latest draft at 7pm on Tuesday, June 19. Members of the public are being encouraged to go along and ask questions. The presentation will precede the Full Council meeting, which will start at 8pm, where the Town Council will then decide if the plan can proceed to the next phase, which is expected to include a round of public consultation.

The town council, in announcing the presentation, said: “Comments made at that stage will be used to improve the Green Living Plan prior to its adoption as a document that the Town’s community will be able to refer to when making choices about its future.”

The Green Living Plan Working Group is part of the Thame Neighbourhood Plan Continuity Committee and as such, its Green Living Plan will feed into the revised Thame Neighbourhood Plan, currently being formulated.

  • Heavy defeat for cricket club’s firsts, but ‘seconds’ back to winning ways

Thame Town Cricket Club – Match reports – June 9 – 12 -THAME faced Banbury on Saturday, June 9, and after winning the toss and choosing to bat, Callum Russell got the innings off to a fine start with a fluent 40. Once again, however, Thame lost wickets in clusters and were indebted to an enterprising 39 not out from Hassam Mushtaq as they scrambled to 190.

A combination of some excellent batting from Banbury skipper Lloyd Sabin (64) and some uncharacteristically mixed bowling saw Banbury ease home for the loss of just three wickets. Thame travel to Horspath this Saturday June 16,. However,

However, Thame showed impressive mastery of the T20 format, on Tuesday evening, June 12, defeating Oxford in their first fixture of the Bernard Tollett competition. Oxford posted the good score of 160 in their 20, but were overhauled in Thame’s 20th over, thanks mainly to a majestic 99* by Gami Kanishka.

    Seconds back to winning ways

THE seconds travelled to Shipton-under-Wychwood and chose to bowl first on a soft wicket. Alex Bell’s accurate opening-spell (5-31) gave Thame a perfect start, continued by the spinners, Ben Buckland (2-20) and Dan Patey (3-23), backed up by keeper Oli Sutcliffe, which saw Shipton finish on 121 all out.

Alex Bell, who took f5 wickets to ensure the 2nds beat Shipton-under-Wychwood and remain at the top of Division 4.

In reply, Thame came flying out of the blocks, thanks to an excellent partnership between Justin Avery (52) and Jack Aston (57*) and comfortably reached the target for the loss of only three wickets, ensuring they remain top of the table. They face Witney Mills at home this Saturday, June 16.

Thirds frustrated by draw away to Cumnor

PUT into bat by Cumnor thirds, Thame reached 53-4 after 18 overs, thanks to opener Andy Jinman (31). A 5th-wicket partnership of 43 by Ian McStay (32) and Vim Desai (24) took the score to 115-6 at 35 overs, with the tail managing to reach 158-9 at the close. In reply, Cumnor’s openers could gain no momentum against Pete Tervet (1-21) and Nick Humphries (0-19 off 8 overs), reaching only 36-1 off 18 overs.

Spinners Vim Desai (2-21) and Ian McStay (2-25) then reduced Cumnor to 75-5 off 37 overs. Despite Luke Hayes’s late wickets (2-2) Cumnor ground out a dull draw, ending on just 93-7 off 45 overs. The thirrds play Oxford and Bletchingdon Nondescripts at home this Saturday, June 16.

Fourths bag valuable points despite defeat to league-leaders

THAE fourths travelled to play league-leaders Cropredy with the opposition racing to 65-1 off the first 10 overs, Max Muncaster taking the first wicket. Switching to spin, Dan Constant recorded his career-best figures of 6-57 off 15 overs, as Cropredy reached 210-9 off their 45 overs. Batting once again proved tough for Thame, against some impressive seam bowling. Innings from Josh Edworthy (37) and Pete McDermott (25) in the middle-order helped Thame to 94 all out in response. Now fifth in Division 10, they travel to play Didcot fouths this Saturday, June 12.

  • Final film of the season at Thame Cinema this Friday

THE POST – showing this Friday  – USA 2017, 113 minutes, 12A certificate – Directed by Steven Spielberg, Starring Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Bob Odenkirk, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sarah Paulson, Tracy Letts, Bradley Whitford,

THAME Cinema 4 All will conclude its season with this superb, old-fashioned Hollywood drama about the Press speaking truth to power – and the individual bravery that this demands.

Based on real events of 1971, it is very much a prequel to the events portrayed in All the President’s Men, and shares much of the earlier masterpiece’s style and substance. Streep is Katherine Graham, the proprietor-publisher at the helm of a financially vulnerable Washington Post. She has succeeded her late husband, who had been given the job by Graham’s father, Eugene Meyer. That the old man did not appear to trust his daughter with the paper is a fact that undermines Katherine’s confidence in her own judgement. It is also a fact that the men around her take as evidence of her lack of capacity for the task at hand.

And what a task it becomes. Long suppressed secret documents have been leaked from the Pentagon revealing that the government had prosecuted the prolonged war in Vietnam knowing that it was a lost cause. The New York Times has already run a piece on the ‘Pentagon Papers’, incurring the wrath of the White House, and the Post must decide whether or not to do the same. Publication will risk harsh injunctions and imprisonment. It will put the very existence of the paper at risk. The situation is complicated by Graham’s familial history at the very heart of the Washington establishment – they have entertained presidents and senators, holidayed with the Kennedys, and must now choose whether or not to sabotage the careers of people close to her.

It is ultimately Graham’s decision. She is torn between the position of her editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks), who argues that they have no choice but to publish the truth, and others on the board who counsel in favour of saving the newspaper from ruin.

Over the course of a few days, Graham manages to find her own voice and her own authority. With Streep and Hanks on screen together for the first time, Spielberg at the helm, and an exceptional supporting cast, you really can’t go wrong. At a point in history when the current White House is doing its best to undermine the fourth estate, it is also a timely celebration of principles, ideals and bravery.
