  • Are you safe as the darker, winter nights draw in?

WINTER  officially begins this weekend when the clocks go back an hour; the perfect reason to check that your house is not vulnerable to opportunist thieves.
Thames Valley Police is working in partnership with Community Safety Partnerships across the Thames Valley to keep you safe as the darker nights draw in.
People across the Thames Valley can pick up security advice from the Thames Valley Police website and social media sites, about the importance of not leaving your house in darkness.

Ch Supt Tim De Meyer, head of Neighbourhood Policing & Partnerships said:  “People who work full time, and usually leave and return from work in the dark, are more likely to fall victim of opportunist burglars. It is vital that we engage with those at risk of burglary and this year we will be encouraging people to look at our Twitter sites and website for crime prevention information.

“Officers will be patrolling neighbourhoods and burglary hot spot areas identifying houses that could benefit from improved home security and posting a postcard- size leaflet through the door advising people to contact them for further crime reduction advice. We will also be using businesses in the area to ensure our message gets out to their staff.”

If no light is on in your home, curtains are not drawn, and no car is in the drive, it’s an obvious sign to an opportunist burglar that no-one is in. At this time of the year more than any other it pays to secure your home.  There are a number of simple and low-cost or free ways to do this, all of which will help reduce the chance of your home becoming the next target.

    * Visit a local retailer to pick up a 24 hour segment timer for under £5. The timer can be used with a lamp, radio or TV to give the impression that someone’s home.
Remember to use an energy efficient light bulb
    *  Register your valuables on www.immobilise.com – its free and takes just a few minutes and if your valuables are stolen, will allow you to tell the police, your insurer, and       the second-hand trade to assist in recovering your property and catch the thief
    *  Keep valuables out of sight
    *  Look your doors and windows, if you have a UPVC door make sure you have double locked it

  • Message from the ex Mayor who launched Thame Tidy Days

Hi Guys I hope you all had a great summer!
I know its a long way off but the date for the next Tidy Thame Day and Mucking Out Moreton will be Sunday,  March 30, 2014!
It is sports relief the week before so I didn’t want to clash with that.

Please let me know if I have missed something that it could clash with ,and if you want to be involved this year in the planning or on the day.
We have a budget this year through a town council grant, sponsorship and fundraising so we can plan to have skips, vans and other equipment and maybe planting and landscaping for the gardeners amongst you, as well as resources to advertise the day better.

Please let me know your thoughts.
    Onwards and Upwards!

  • Young dancers & musicians ‘a joy’ for shoppers

    Dear Editor,

What a joy they were, the National Youth FolkloreTroupe of England who entertained shoppers and visitors outside the Thame Town Hall on Saturday October 5. About 35 youngsters aged between 10 and 18 performed intricate dances of various folk traditions to music provided by themselves. They were clearly enjoying themselves greatly ; the complicated formations they performed  seemed effortless and their lead dancers interacted cheerfully with the watchers. They were very good musicians and they ended with  with an exhilarating hornpipe which had  the audience clapping in time and shouting out their approval.  Brilliant. A tonic for me, and from comments people were making, others as well. If my knees were 60 years younger I would have wanted to join in.

OVERNIGHT between 11pm yesterday (1/10), and 7am yesterday (2/10), a property in Pickenfield, Thame, was burgled.

It appears entry was gained by reaching in through a cat flap on the rear door then using keys that had been left on the inside of the door look to open the door.

Offender(s) stole items from the kitchen area, including two laptop computers, Iphone, keys, handbag and contents, before stealing a black BMW X5 vehicle from the driveway.

Residents are advised to secure all doors and windows at night and when going out. Remove keys from the inside of door and window locks when not in use and keep them out of reach from letterboxes and cat flaps.
