  • Thame Councillors Luke Warm About Strengthening Their Role

THAME’s town councillors, and their County Councillor seem unconcerned that an independent commission has found that nearly half of rural people do not believe that they can influence decisions, and that a quarter would not channel their views through their local councillor.
At a meeting of Thame Town Council’s Policy and Resources committee recently, the committee was asked to consider taking part in an Enquiry into strengthening the role of rural councillors, to be carried out by the Commission for Rural Communities, an independent body set up after the 2006 Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act came into force.
County Councillor, Nick Carter told the meeting:”This is just another trendy body set up by this government, that should be treated with circumspection and not touched with a long barge pole.”

The Commission wants to hear from rural councils, parish clerks, community groups, local partnerships, council officials, business associations and anyone with ideas and experience they want to share eg:
    * examples where rural councillors are helping their community influence local decisions
    * the barriers and constraints that stand in the way of rural councillors doing more
    * why people sometimes chose other routes, such as charities or community groups to influence local decisions
    * what the role of councillors should be in the future and what’s needed to unlock that potential.

The committee concluded that individual councillors could look up the details themselves on the Commission’s website if they wanted to.

  • Distraction Burglary ? Little Milton

THE Police are appealing for witnesses to a distraction burglary that took place on Monday (12/3) in Little Milton.
At around 4.30pm a man called at the house of an 85-year-old lady in Old Field. He said that he had come to fix her broken fence. She did not let him into the house, but instead let him down the side gate into the garden. She then went through the house and out into the garden to speak with the man about the fence, leaving the back door open. The man eventually left through the side gate and the woman returned to the house. She found that someone had searched through some of the rooms and cash had been stolen.

Det Con Georgina Bradley, from Thame CID, said:”In this instance the offenders have seen that the lady had a broken fence and used it as a way to get her out of the house and distract her. People should be aware that if a company does need to do some work to their house, they will usually call in advance. If you do receive a cold caller, then ask for identification or failing that, call the company to check.
“If anyone did witness this incident or saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area, then they should get in touch.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Det Con Bradley via the 24-hour Police Enquiry Centre on 0845 8 505 505, or if you don?t want to talk to police or give your name, call the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.

  • Appeal To Honniball Family

THE following was received recently from someone researching their family history:
    Dear Editor
I am trying to trace members of the Honniball family who are linked to my own family through my late Grandfather Frank Jarvis, who founded the Conway Stewart Pen Company in the early 1900s. Frank’s sister Kate Jarvis married Evan Honniball and they had three or four sons who attended Epsom College.

I would very much appreciate any information on this branch of my family who are also related to Lionel Crabb, the naval diver and war hero who disappeared in 1956.
    Yours sincerely

  • Thame-Wide Drinking Ban Proposal

THAME town council wants to extend the town centre Designated Drinking Area Order, to cover the whole of Thame.
The decision to seek to extend the current order came at a meeting last night (13/03) of the town council’s Policy and Resources committee, in an effort to curb increased anti-social behaviour associated with alcohol consumption in some residential streets off the town centre and in the town’s recreation areas, especially Elms Park and Southern Road Recreation Ground.
The way the order works is that it gives extra powers to the police and Police Community Support officers to demand that drink in open vessels be handed to the officers if they believe that drunken behaviour is anti-social. It is not a blanket ban on drinking within the area, for instance picnicing in parks or street party events.
The council’s aim is to extend the current Order to include the whole town and Moreton Lane, and consultation with the police and the district council will be carried out to see if the extension is practical and enforceable.
