CHINNOR & THAME FRIENDS OF THE EARTH ? PUBLIC MEETING AND AGM ? 30 MARCH 2006, CHINNOR VILLAGE CENTRE

Friends of the Earth?s invited speaker will address the very important issue of heating our homes and our own energy supply, in the light of rising gas and electricity bills. The talk will focus on new developments locally and what can be done about existing homes.

The talk, entitled ?RENEWABLE ENERGY SOLUTIONS?, will follow Chinnor and Thame FoE?s short AGM, on Thursday 30th March at the Chinnor Village Centre, 7.30 ? 9.30pm. Ian Bacon, who works with a group called Thames Valley Energy, will give the talk.

TV Energy works closely with local councils, seeking energy solutions for new and existing developments.
Quote: ?World-wide we are experiencing the first dramatic changes to our climate caused in part by overdependence on fossil fuels. Production of oil and gas is peaking as supply is exhausted yet demand continues to grow unabated. As a result we see fossil fuel energy prices spiralling upwards. Given the many geopolitical disruptions in supplier countries, we face increasing security risks of energy supply in the UK. Making the change now to the increased use of locally derived renewable energy offers the best long term solution to protect our communities and our businesses, generating jobs and new enterprises in tune with the environment.?
    Keith Richards, TV Energy.

This is an open meeting to which we invite all members of the public.

Entrance is free. Light refreshments provided.

  • Twinning Quiz ‘Succ

A ST PATRICK’S day quiz, held by the Thame and District Twinning Association, was enjoyed by over 80 teamsters at the Barns Centre, and helped raise much needed funds for the group.
The winning team, yet again, consisted of teachers and ex-teachers from Beaconsfield High School.
The quiz questions, compiled by Chairman, Nigel Champken-Woods, included a round on the saint himself, including the surprising fact that he was, in fact, born in Wales and not on the Emerald Isle.
The evening included a fish and chip supper and a ‘green’ raffle, with prizes ranging from two pairs of green, gents socks to a magnificent plant donated by Waitrose of Thame.
A group from Montesson, Thame’s twin town in France, are coming to Thame in May, and the Twinning Association would like to hear from anyone who would like to host either single people, couples or families for the week-end.
The week-ends are always fun and this coming visit will include an organised trip to Claydon House, which has associations with Florence Nightingale.

  • Council Decides To Keep Hanging Baskets

IN the light of a hose pipe ban in the area, as from April 3, Thame town councillors have decided to go ahead and plant summer hanging baskets around the town centre.
At Tuesday’s meeting of the Culture, Leisure and Recreation Committee, it was agreed that if Thames Water’s ban continued for some time, the Council would ask local businesses and residents to take responsibility for watering the baskets with recycled water.
The decision followed several alternative watering solutions suggested by councillors, including filling a bowser from Cuttlebrook, collecting the town hall’s ‘grey’ water in a tank and among the more fanciful suggestions (tongue firmly in cheek with this one), collecting residents’ bath water.

  • Twelfth Annual Lace Event Raises Restoration Funds (Contributed)

THAME’s twelfth, annual Lace Day took place recently in the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Thame, and raised much needed funds for restoration to the building.
This year there were 196 Lace makers attending, some having travelled many miles for what has become a very popular event. They came from as far away as St Albans, Northampton, Slough, Moreton in Marsh and many other places. As usual there were some Lace Suppliers, selling thread, bobbins, pins, patterns and beads which is one of the attractions for the Lace makers as it is difficult to buy the materials required in ordinary shops.

The organ was played throughout the day creating a very mellow atmosphere and, although bitterly cold, outside the sun shone through the windows the whole day and it felt very warm in the Church. Visitors were welcome to come and watch the lace makers demonstrating their skills. A raffle was held which raised

However, some tickets have been reserved for Haddenham residents. Call 01926 729733 for times, prices and bookings.

  • Hoody Presentation By ‘Stitch & Bitchers’

THAMES branch of Stitch and Bitch, which meets at the Six Bells in Thame, made a very special presentation this week to the Manager of the Six Bells pub.
The group of knitters, who meet every Tuesday at the Six Bells, presented the pub Manager, Dominic Field, with a tiny, knitted ‘hoody’ for his new baby son, Sidney.
The jacket was knitted by the group’s founder, Jeanette Matelot.
Dominic was overwhelmed by the gift and told the group that the ladies really make his day, and bring a real spark to Tuesday nights at ‘the Bells’.
Anyone who loves knitting, sewing, or any other needlecraft, and chatting to like-minded stitchers, is welcome to go along to The Six Bells in Thame, any Tuesday night, at 8pm.
