STATEMENT from Cllr Larry Sanders, Leader of the Green Group on Oxfordshire County Council.
“The proposed Conservative Budget spending cuts on home, residential, intermediate and respite care for older people ignores the increase in numbers of very old people. Free School Transport Threat
OXFORDSHIRE County Council is considering making cuts to free transport for pupils attending faith schools in the county.
As a cost cutting excercise, the council proposes ending free travel to faith schools, including St Joseph’s in Thame, for pupils who live outside the catchment area of their school or who travel more than two (up to the age of 8 years) or three (for older children) miles to school and do not attend their nearest school.
A consultation excercise is currently being carried out by the county council and if it decides to go ahead, the changes will take effect from 2007.To take part in this consultation, visit the Consultation Tracker on the ?Feedback On-Line? pages of the County Council’s web site www.oxfordshire.gov.uk.
The closing date for responses is March 8. For more information, contact Jo Edge on 01865 810616 or email her at jo.edge@oxfordshire.gov.uk. -

Thame Stitch n’ Bitch Club Attracts Attention
THAME’S very own Stitch n’Bitch Club, the knitting craze that’s sweeping the world, has attracted the attention of the local media, featuring on Mix ’96 last Friday, throughout their afternoon news bulletins.
The group’s founder, Jeanette Matelot, was interviwed by the station and snippets of the conversation played over the airways. With clever editing and sound-bites like: “Swap your anger for Angorra,” listeners got a taste of the fun, relaxation and socialising (usually with a glass of wine at the elbow)that charactises these groups of stitchers. Through Jeanette’s fun-loving evangelising about the merits of sitting together with friends and creating something whilst at the same time, having a good old-fashioned chin-way, more and more people have contacted her about joining the group. And its not only women who have taken to the needles; at last night’s meeting at the Six Bells pub in Thame, which was interrupted by an evacuation of the premises when a fire alarm went off, the Deputy Manager, Michael had a go!Anyone who would like more information about ‘Thame Twinset’ (the name reflects the origins of the group which began during a conversation among members of Thame’s Twinning Association), can contact Jeanette by email: jm@telot.wanadoo.co.uk
