  • Hard work pays for Thame Utd at Cheltenham

THAME United were made to work hard to secure three points on Saturday (20/09) at Petersfield Park, as second half goals from Dan West and Ellis Hercules eventually proved enough to secure victory.

thame_united (400x400)From start to finish, the first half was a disjointed affair as neither team were able to establish any real rhythm on a difficult playing surface. For the first quarter of the game, it was United who looked most likely to score, but they lacked the clinical touch in front of goal and, gradually, the game become condensed in the centre of the pitch with Jordan Bryan, in particular, looking dangerous for Cheltenham. Ten minutes before the break United felt that they should have been awarded a penalty when Marcus Mealing beat Cheltenham keeper, Ryan Betteridge, to the ball only for the keeper to follow-through and up-end Mealing. The referee, however, saw no offence and the protests were to no avail.

With the game goalless at half-time, whatever manager Mark West said during the interval seemed to work as United pressed the home side from the whistle. Luke Ricketts had a great chance to open the scoring on 55 minutes when he beat his marker and had a clear run at goal, only to see his goal bound shot saved by the legs of Betteridge. However, United only had to wait two minutes before taking the lead. United won a corner on the left flank that skipper Adam Morris floated to the back post where Marcus Mealing headed the ball back across goal for Dan West to finish from close range.

The goal seemed to settle United and, whilst the game again became contained in the central third of the pitch, Cockerill in the Thame goal was rarely threatened. The second goal arrived on 75 minutes when centre back Ellis Hercules collected the ball just inside the Cheltenham half and went on a mazy run that saw him beat four defenders before confidently placing the ball beyond Betteridge and in to the far corner of the goal.

  • Thame netball: (1) Kites flying high after season’s first match

    Thame Hurricans' 2014 team
    Thame Hurricans’ 2014 team

HURRICANES started the game confidently taking an early lead. They had strong passing up the court with accurate shooting from Helen and Lucy to finish. Hurricanes were leading 8-6 at the end of the first quarter but unfortunately, Verity had to retire due to an old injury.

Chantelle took over centre position, with strong passing throughout, but Kites took advantage of the change of line up and managed to pull back taking the lead in the second quarter.

The third quarter saw excellent defending by Lyn, Sue and Emma. They put pressure on the Kites shooters and didn’t allow them to increase their lead.
It was very exciting going into the final quarter with only one goal between the teams. Lynn, now centre, found space midcourt and continued to support the shooters.

The game remained tight but Kites managed to pull away, with a final score of Hurricanes 23, Kites 26.
Squad: Sue F, Lyn H, Lynn P, Helen T, Lucy S, Chantelle, Verity, Emma and Caro.

    (2) Connexions down after Tornadoes sweep through – THAME Tornadoes vs Connexions. 10 Sept 2014

THAME Tornadoes started the new season with gusto. Their first match was set to be a thrilling affair, facing recently demoted Connexions who are always strong opposition.

Thame got off to a slow start and were 2-0 down before Helen (GS) opened their account with a goal from a beautifully timed feed from Lisa (C). Accurate passing and shooting from Connexions ensued they pulled ahead to an 8-2 lead during the first quarter, but Thame were not to be cowed and after a small change in tactics, opening up the circle, they ended the first quarter only 9-5 down.

The second quarter was an end-to-end affair, but Connexions began to pull ahead, dominating centre court and cramping Thame in the circle. A super long-range shot from Heather (GA), however ensured Thame ended the quarter six goals behind. Some work to do….

Thame were not to lose heart and began the second half with steely determination. Kirsty (GK) and Sheena (GD) were starting to take a stranglehold in the Connexions circle and pulled off some outstanding interceptions which began to badly frustrate the Connexions attack. This allowed Thame to quickly and accurately move the ball up the court and Susie (WA) was making excellent use of the width allowing Thame to finish the quarter one goal to the good.

The final quarter was nail-biting, the lead swapping almost every minute. Karen (WA) was able to provide a new lease of life to Thame with some super, high passes into the deadly accurate Hayley (GS) in the circle. Connexions were now tiring and Thame were able to fully capitalise, with Nicola (WD) able to spin some rapid-fire balls out to the wings and wear Connexions down even further. Thame were exultant, winning by a massive eight goals at 30-22. An outstanding start for Tornadoes.

Man of the match Heather (GA), chosen by Connexions.

  • Chinnor leave it too late!

IN the local derby on Saturday (13/09) between Chinnor RFC’s new look team and Henley, returning from National 1, the honours went to the home side with Henley winning 28-24.

chi9nnor (400x240)The first half was all Henley; quicker tougher and harder at all phases of the game. The scoring opened in just the second minute when Henley, disrupting a Chinnor scrum, allowed scrum-half Conor Murphy to scoot down the blindside unopposed from 35m out for the opening try. Chinnor thought they had the next score when Jack Hayes, charging down Murphy’s kick on 10m, gathered the loose ball and, in the act of crossing the line unopposed, dropped the ball. Miss number one.

On the 10th minute, Henley scored through a penalty goal from Conor Murphy after a high tackle, increasing their lead to 8-0. Three minutes later, Chinnor lost their own lineout ball 15m from the Henley line – a frequent occurrence throughout the match – and a delightful inside pass saw the Henley right winger dash almost the full length to be denied a try in the corner. Henley scored again in the 20th minute when Kroman was penalised for coming in at the side, and Murphy stroked a penalty goal for an 11-0 lead to the home side. A simple right-to-left passing movement by Henley ended with their second try when winger Owen almost casually sidestepped in from touch, to dot down on the 28th minute. For Chinnor, Keohane and Boughton missed straightforward penalty attempts in front of goal. Misses two and three.

Things went from bad to worse for Chinnor, already struggling to keep on the coat tails of Henley, when number eight, Alfie To’oala, remonstrating too forcibly when being held back at a ruck, was red carded by the referee.

Henley went in at the break 16-0 ahead and looking set to score a hatful more.

Right from the kick-off in the second half, Chinnor were awarded a penalty goal in front of the posts and this time Keohane’s aim was accurate for their first points of the match and Henley lead of 16-3. Their promising start was undone when the Henley’s blindside flanker, Tom Hall, collected the ball on Chinnor’s 22 and barrelled, spun and drove his way through six tackles to appear to score in the corner. After consultation with the touch judge, the try was awarded to the clear surprise of Chinnor’s defenders and nearby spectators. Murphy added the extras for a 23-3 lead on 46 minutes.

Chinnor’s fortunes began to change with a sustained attack in Henley’s red zone ending with winger Martey being driven over by the posts on 52 minutes. Keohane added the extras to reduce the deficit to 23-10 in favour of Henley. Chinnor began to put the squeeze on the home side, and were now contesting equally at each phase of play with perhaps the exception of the lineout. But fortunes changed again when, Tibbatts was yellow carded on 64 minutes, to reduce the visitors to just 13 players and so it came as no surprise that just one minute later Henley’s Stapley scored their bonus try from a rolling maul to put the match score at 28-10.

However, Chinnor, now with greater resolve, came back into the match in dramatic fashion. Attacking the Henley line for several minutes, they were repulsed each time until some neat footwork from skipper Martin Nutt led to Chinnor’s second try of the match on the 71st minute. Boughton converted to make the match score 28-17 with 72 minutes played. It was then Henley’s turn to incur the wrath of the referee for constant infringements in their desperate attempts to prevent Chinnor scoring, receiving two yellow cards in the space of four minutes. Chinnor’s Haile benefited, running in their third try on 79 minutes. Boughton converted for 28-24 but there was no time to forge the upset threatened by the re-energised visitors from Thame.

Chinnor had a poor first half, and were second best in every phase of the game. The unfortunate sending-off of To’oala seemed to galvanise the team and their performance in the second half, particularly in the last quarter, when they almost nicked a victory.

Waddingham for Chinnor was outstanding; Martey looked most promising and Henley’s scrum-half Murphy was most influential in the match. Chinnor will be buoyed by outscoring their opponents by 24 points to 12 in the second half but must learn to get into the game much earlier, to turn misses into points and to keep 15 players on the pitch.

Chinnor: Martin Nutt (c), Matt Mountford, Jack Hayes, Junior Fatialofa, Reuben Haile, Ed Keohane, Reece Boughton, Simone Carloni, Jamie Townsend, Tino Paoletti, Josh Kroman, Andrew Tibbatts, Ben Manning, Alex Waddingham, Alfie To’oala

  • Thame’s FA Cup ended by Burnham

SOUTHERN League Premier Division side Burnham brought Thame’s FA Cup run to an end on Saturday, with a 2-1 victory at the ASM Stadium.

Dan West, who scored Thame’s goal against Burnham on Saturday

The game got off to the worst possible start for United when, after eight minutes, and with goalkeeper Josh Cockerill already called in to action twice, United were reduced to ten men when Ellis Hercules was adjudged to have handled on the goal line. Hercules was immediately dismissed from the field of play with Burnham captain, Nathan Poulton, despatching the penalty.

The sending-off forced manager Mark West to re-organise, with Dan West moving to Centre Back from Midfield. Whilst, as a consequence, Burnham maintained the bulk of possession, they were unable to break-down a well organised defence, with the best chance for Thame falling to Luke Ricketts in the 34th minute whose drive from an acute angle was saved by the Burnham keeper.

With no change in the score line at half-time, United thought they had earned a penalty of their own in the 52nd minute when an Adam Morris cross hit the hand of a visiting defender, but the referee waved away the appeals. Burnham, however, continued to enjoy the bulk of possession without threatening Cockerill, and indeed it was United who almost equalised in the 66th minute when a 20-yard drive from Ollie Lynch was tipped over the bar. Five minutes later and Burnham extended their lead when a cross of the right was met by Lockhart-Adams, who scored from close range.

United were left hoping that lightening would strike twice and that they would again come back from two down in the FA Cup, and a Dan West effort from close range in the 89th minute suggested this may be the case. Alas, it was not to be and it is Burnham who progressed to the next round.

  • Thame draw against Holyport

IN a game where both sides missed penalties, the one-all, drawn match on Tuesday (09/09) between Thame Utd and Holyport was a fair result as neither side created quite enough in the final third to take the three points.

The first half, however, belonged to United as they put their hosts on the back foot from the start. With Adam Morris dominating the midfield, the first chance came after only three minutes when an Ellis Hercules header from a corner came back off the post and the ball was scrambled clear. Whilst United were dominating possession, they were somewhat surprised to see a penalty awarded against Matt Hall in the 15th minute for hand ball. However, keeper Josh Cockerill did well to save the spot kick from Jamie West.

Three minutes later and United were in front when Dan West did well to turn in the box before firing in to the top corner. Luke Ricketts nearly doubled the lead with a drive from 20 yards three minutes later, before a sublime cross from Dan Jones in the 29th minute was met by the head of Ben Connelly, only for the header to go narrowly wide of the post. Two minutes later and Jordan Davis headed over from an Adam Morris cross. Despite the goal attempts, Holyport equalised five minutes before the break when Jamie West struck a powerful effort from 20 yards that swerved beyond Cockerill.

Holyport came out fired-up for the second half and, for the first twenty minutes, United struggled to find the rhythm that had served them so well in the first half, with the best opportunity again falling to Jamie West, with Cockerill saving well. Ellis Hercules also went close with a header before United were given the chance to take all three points when Dan West was adjudged to have been fouled in the penalty area. However, the penalty from Dan Jones was saved – the last meaningful action of the match.

  • Uncomfortable defeat by Ascot for Thame

FORMER Wycombe Wanderers striker Damian Markman gave Thame United a lesson in finishing on Friday, as Ascot United won comfortably at the ASM Stadium, in a Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division match.

thame_united (400x400)Whilst United made a number of changes to the side that had beaten Highmoor Ibis in the FA Cup last weekend, few could have anticipated a first half hour where Ascot scored four without reply. First Damian Markman finished well after seven minutes, before Joe Grant capitalised on hesitation in the Thame defence to make it two after a quarter of an hour. A few minutes later Dan West almost got United back in the game, rounding keeper Chris Grace only to see his effort cleared. It was three on 22 minutes as Markman scored his second, completing his hat-trick ten minutes later.

It was not all one way traffic though, as Jordan Davis and Ben Connelly went close, before two good penalty appeals for incidents involving Jordan Davis and Dan Jones were waved away.

United played the better football for much of the second half, with Ascot content to sit back, and as the game wore on United created some good goal scoring opportunities without really testing Grace. With Adam Morris, Dan Jones and Adam Hazell all having efforts on goal, the best chance fell to Ellis Hercules, whose downward header bounced up and against the bar.

Final score: Thame United 0 Ascot United 4

United will have the opportunity to quickly put the match behind them on Tuesday night as they travel to Holyport, and will be looking for a measure of revenge when they visit the Racecourse Ground in 10 days time.

United: Cockerill, Johnson, Hall, Hercules, Coverley (Hazell), Lynch, Connelly (Dugmore), Morris, West, Davis, (Evans), Jones
