  • Get set for the Thame 10K

THAME’S largest mass participation sporting event, the Thame CPM 10km Road Race, is on Sunday, (June 29), when there will be 1000 runners pounding a course through the town centre to Towersey and back along the Phoenix Trail, starting at 9.30am from Thame Leisure Centre.

10k_1The race is full and so there will be NO ENTRIES ON RACE DAY. There will be road closure in place on the Oxford Road for five minutes from 9.30 to 9.35 am, and then on the ring road from the rugby club to Chinnor Road from 9.40 to 10.30 am.

Thame 10K has been running since 1985 and has grown to be one of the key sporting fixtures in Thame and is sponsored by CPM. The public’s support is very important for the runners, many of them taking part to raise money for charities and several local charities will benefit from the funds raised by the organisers.

For more information about the race and for information after the race, visit Thame Runners’ website. http://thamerunners.co.uk/

  • Who’s the mystery runner?

HADDENHAM Runners are well into their 2014 running season with their numbers steadily growing with each run.

mystery_runner (400x225)With the Thame 10k looming on the horizon, a mystery runner has been spotted training on several occasions, keen to keep their anonymity.

Rumours have been heard that this is none other than local celebrity, ‘The Thamensian’, who appears to have taken up the offer from Thame Runners of a free entry to Thame 10k and free beer (1 bottle) from Haddenham Runners.

Do you recognize the runner in the picture? Have you seen them out training? Could this be our local hero? Do you know what’s going on behind his disguise? Does anyone know his way?

Be sure to support all the runners this Sunday, June 29, for Thame’s big race.

  • Racquets hosts British #1 Squash Champion exhibition

EXCITING results from Racquets Graded Tournaments and excitement at playing British Closed Champion

admin-ajaxOver last weekend 50 people played in the Racquets June Open Graded Tournament and enjoyed watching the British Closed squash champion exhibit how the game is played professionally in a social but competitive game with local professional Will John.

Our tournament, designed to allow everyone – of all standards and all ages – to play and enjoy the great games of squash and racketball, saw top county players playing alongside juniors and ladies who have only been playing the game for weeks and months.

The ladies grade was won by a relative new comer to the game, Alice Draycott from London, who had to borrow a racket for each game.  The junior beginners tournament was competed for by 5 boys and girls who have been playing only since the beginning of the year.  Chris Watts, from Barley Hill Primary School, won the grade which was played in true competitive but clean sporting fun.

Other grades, including a racketball doubles tournament, were entered by players ranging in experience from a few years of playing right up to those who’ve been playing for over 30 years !  One of two were back from a break from the game as the buzz of the club this year has been inspiring them to start playing again.  Beth John who has been playing squash at Racquets for 15 years won the Racketball doubles with Ossie Mustafa who is recovering from a back injury with help from the Racquets gym staff.

The winners of the tournaments walked away with some neat prizes sponsored by Meritus Hotels and a sense of achievement as many have played few, if any, tournaments before.

Peter-Hopkins-Annabel-Bacon-Alison-Waters-Exhibition-webAlison Waters played 10 of the tournament entrants each including juniors who’ve been playing for a few months and Peter and Annabel, pictured here, were so excited to have the chance to play such a top professional player.

Alison Waters appears to have enjoyed visiting our Thame club as she tweeted ‘@Simonracquets great night @Racquetsfitness playing exhibition with @WillROJohn. Great club and people! Hope to be back…’ from @AliWat1.

Racquets Fitness Centre in Thame is running another of its popular Graded and Doubles squash and racketball tournaments on June 6/7/8th, for all ages and levels, and is running a competition offering the lucky winner the chance to play Alison Waters – the British number one, 1 lady squash player.

Sue Martin-Downhill, who is organising the event, explained: “For racketball everyone will be playing doubles. It’s a fun game; one hit each and everyone of every standard can play. For squash players who are new to the game – men, ladies or juniors, there’ll be singles tournaments.

“For the more experienced players we’ll be playing doubles! We’ll teach you the tactics and the rules – so don’t worry if you’ve never played before. Also, if you don’t have a partner that’s no problem either as we can pair you up. We hope you are up for some fun! We look forward to seeing you there.”
